The site gradually expanded and by the 1960s became the state’s largest train station with more than 70 trains coming and going every day. The 2.6 hectare site was sold to ABC in 1985, and today the ABC Hobart building houses four radio studios, as well as live music and production studios and a large television studio. The building is home to 13 different tenants, including other local media and organisations.

The ABC Charity Tree Appeal is Tasmania’s largest Christmas charity and celebrates 30 years of generosity from the community. After a tough year for many, we can help together by raising donations for the holidays for the Tasmanians who need it most. The Donation Tree Appeal will kick off with a special Open Day event on ABC Hobart on Saturday, November 13.

Join us in the foyer of ABC Hobart from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM to donate and take pictures with the giant Christmas tree. There will also be fun and ABC kids activities! While we don’t accept physical gifts or do building tours this year, you can donate cash and leave a Christmas card for a Tasmanian in need.

To enter this year’s photo contest, share pictures of your favorite places and stories about them on Instagram or Facebook using the hashtags #oh_hobart and #oh_launceston. Stay tuned for lots of prizes. Celebrate 80 years of Radio Hobart, Hobart’s most streamed radio station! Discover what radio was like in 1938 and the years that followed. There will be an eclectic array of radio, broadcast equipment, rare photographs and archival materials to browse through interactive exhibits organized by the Tasmanian Sound Conservation Society.

People of all ages will be able to interact with the history and characters that shaped the much-loved radio you listen to today, and learn about the vital service the station has and provides.

The show will be kicked off by the Weekend program on Sunday, April 15th, with special guests including Peter Cundall, live from the Pod and hosted by the Gardens, with a range of events including herb sale, cookery demonstrations, edible glasses for kids and more. . .

Then, on Wednesday, April 18, see Helen Shield broadcast your afternoon from a thick pane of history from 13:30 to 16:00, doing modern live radio with a private wireless among the ruins.
