Experience the history of World Heritage-listed criminals. Discover the stories of the many people who tried to win Maria. Climb mountains and gaze over blue seas. Swim in crystal clear bays and walk on soft, white beaches. Feel the nature all around you – the sea breeze, the scents of the ocean and the forest and the abundance of wild life. This is a wild and relaxing island, a place to stay, to leave the ordinary life and immerse yourself.

As soon as you set foot on the island, you will quickly reach the historic town of Darlington where you can spend hours exploring the old buildings and discovering Darlington’s fascinating history. The stone Commissariat Store, 150 meters from the pier, is the oldest building on the island and is now a visitor center with exhibitions and information about the island. This was the first penal station for convicts and was established in 1825 and lasted for 7 years. Between 1842-1850 it became a probation station for criminals. Most of the whitewashed buildings were built during this period. At its peak there were up to 500 convicts. Today, it is recognized as Australia’s finest example of a convict probation facility.

From Darlington it is an easy walk to the Painted Rocks to see the amazing patterns in the sandstone. These interesting features were caused by groundwater seeping through the sandstone and leaving traces of iron oxide in the rock formation. This seems to have happened long ago in a monsoon climate. It’s a lovely place to visit and you can easily walk or cycle there from Darlington which is only 2km away.

In the early 1900s Ruby Hut was built high on the hill overlooking Darlington Bay on top of the ruins of the old judge’s house. Ruby Hutt operated a pedal telegraph, which at the time was the only communication link from Maria Island to the mainland. From here the weather information was sent to Orford Post and Telegraph Office (now Orford Sanda House B&B) for transmission back to Hobart. It is also said that Ruby would hang a lantern in the window of her house at night to guide the ship that collected and delivered mail to the island.

What a beautiful property and wonderful hosts! It exceeded our expectations. Lots of thoughtful little touches throughout. A lovely garden to stroll through. Very nice breakfast with homemade fruit – the best! We will definitely try to stay here next time we travel down Tassie’s east coast.

From Fiona’s warm welcome, to the very comfortable bed, to the beautiful garden, to the homegrown apricots from the garden, Sanda’s House was a real find! The highlight was the soothing scent of jasmine wafting from the garden as we settled in for the night. Thank you and we will be back! With million dollar ocean views and a near waterfront location on Spring Beach, the house has been enjoyed by family, friends and guests since the 1970’s.

In 2016 the House was completely renovated (new kitchen, new bathroom, new large deck, polished floor, heating, etc.) to provide modern quality facilities while maintaining its original homely feel.

The rustic, clapboard cottage sits at the southern end of the beach, looking over Mercury Road to the ocean and Maria Island. It’s a real waterfront, closest to the water from Spring Beach Houses, with a fantastic view. As there are no roads to cross, it is a 50m and minute walk to the beach and close enough to the ocean to be lulled to sleep by the waves at night. Loved by many over the years, we know you will be delighted with this holiday home.
