Act Public Holidays 2016 – The Ministry of Manpower yesterday published the dates of public holidays for next year, with six of the 11 falling on Friday, Sunday or Monday.
That’s just one short of this year’s bumper attendance of seven long weekends, but below the average of five in recent years.

If a public holiday falls on a Sunday, it means that the next day is a day off. Eight public holidays this year fall on a Friday, Sunday or Monday – August 7 was declared a public holiday as part of Singapore’s 50th birthday celebrations, making for a four-day weekend.

Last year and the year before there were four long weekends. There were five in 2012 and 2011, and seven in 2010.
Next year there will also be a four-day weekend, as the first and second days of the Chinese New Year will fall on Monday and Tuesday next year, as well as this year’s, which fell on Thursday and Friday.

Next year, two public holidays fall on a Saturday – Vesak Day on 21 May and Deepavali on 29 October.

Employees who do not have to work on Saturdays can request a day off or an allowance on this holiday if this is stipulated in the employment law.
Deepavali is also subject to change when the Hindu almanac becomes available. For this year, the Hindu Advisory Council has confirmed that Deepavali will fall on November 10 – a Tuesday – which was announced earlier.
For example, at OCBC Bank, employees get a day off, but they have to clean it up within a month.
A spokeswoman for Pan Pacific Hotels Group said its staff would also get the day off, but they had three months to use it.

SINGAPORE – Workers in Singapore planning to take a short vacation over the 2018 long weekend may want to put those plans on hold.
Of the 11 public holidays in 2018, only four fall on a Friday or Monday. No one will fall on Sunday next year.
These four are: New Year’s Day, the first day of the Chinese New Year, Good Friday and Hari Raya Puasa. The dates were released on Wednesday (April 5) by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

That is a drop from the seven long weekends that workers here had in 2015 and will enjoy this year as well. In 2016, this number decreased slightly to six.
However, workers can still get five long weekends if they take Monday and Friday off.
Labor Day, Vesak Day, Deepavali and Christmas Day fall on a Tuesday, meaning those who take the Monday off for these public holidays can enjoy a four-day weekend.
National Day falls on Thursday, so employees who take leave on August 10, 2018 – the second day of the public holiday – will also enjoy a four-day break.
