How To Visit The Hobbiton Movie Location In New Zealand
The 12 acres of lush, green hills and natural settings make you feel like you’re in Middle-earth, far away from all your problems and as far away as you can get from Mount Doom.
Today, the film set remains and is a popular tourist attraction in New Zealand’s North Island.
You can rent a car and drive here yourself, or you can get a guided tour to take you back and forth.
Often tour companies combine this tour with the Waitomo Glowworm Caves on a day trip from Auckland.

You can also take a bus from Auckland for around NZ$50-60, but this is your slowest option, taking around 3 1/2 hours.
You should arrive at Hobbiton’s main entrance before taking the shuttle bus to Alexander Farm.
At the main entrance there is a souvenir shop, a small cafe and a bathroom that I recommend you use before starting your tour.
Although you can drive here yourself, you cannot visit a movie set without a driver.

The tour costs $89 for an adult ticket and $44 for a youth ticket, but it’s worth it. Children under 8 are free.
Tours are scheduled from 9 am to 3:30 pm and last approximately 2 hours. You should arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour.
You can choose to supplement your ticket with breakfast or lunch ($26 and $36, respectively) and extend your tour from 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
If you don’t want to pay for your food in advance, the cafe also has snacks for sale, including meat pies and muffins for NZ$3-$6, on arrival.

Your tour includes a leisurely stroll around the film set with an explanation of the buildings and characters meant to inhabit each house.
Tours are scheduled 10-20 minutes apart from each other so there are other groups arriving behind you.
Along with the walking tour, at the end you will be served a drink of your choice, cider, beer or non-alcoholic drink at the Green Dragon Inn.

Visiting Hobbiton And Waitomo Glowworm Caves — Planned Wanderings
In addition to day tours, Hobbiton offers dinner tours four times a week on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights throughout the year.
This ticket costs $199/pp and includes a dusk and evening set tour when you depart.
At night, the set lights up and looks completely different than during the day, magical.
The meal resembles a traditional Hobbit feast and includes slow-cooked lamb, beef and beer casserole, and roast pumpkin.

Dishes are placed in the middle of the table for everyone to share and dig into. You will not be hungry. Lunch is also served at the Green Dragon Inn.
Available on weekends, the tour includes a visit to the film set, drinks at the Green Dragon Inn and breakfast at the Millhouse.
A hot breakfast is included, such as scrambled eggs and potatoes, as well as cold items such as fruit and pastries.
Not to forget, the best time to visit Hobbiton is the first visit of the day. This way, you’ll have fewer people on set and you’ll feel less rushed.
Day Trip To Hobbiton
If you go at noon, it’s crowded. Once you know you’re going to New Zealand, pick a day and book the first available tour, as you’ll need to book in advance.
Also, I hate to disappoint you but there is nothing behind the fancy doors you see on tour.
There are no real hobbits here, and the scenes in the building are all filmed elsewhere, so when you open the door all you see is empty space.
However, there is plenty of detail outside the house, with hobbit clothes hanging to dry, a mini hobbit pram and a fruit stand.

It’s definitely a splurge, but really the only place worth visiting while in New Zealand. At Waitomo Glow Worm Caves, one of their experienced guides will take you on a walk through the caves and talk about the limestone formations and glowworms. At the end of the cave tour, board the iconic boat to visit the world-famous Glowworm Grotto (subject to water levels). Before exiting the cave, wake up in silence with thousands of magical light worms unique to the Southern Hemisphere.
