Bay Area Lyme Foundation Tick Testing – The CDC announced that the number of people diagnosed with Lyme disease each year has risen to nearly half a million, a 59% increase from the estimated 300,000 previously listed on the CDC’s website. This is based on new findings in two studies published in Emerging Infectious Diseases
Lyme is one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the country, but research on Lyme is sorely lacking. For West Nile less than 2% of the population and HIV. There are now about half a million new cases of Lyme disease in the US each year — the same as HIV.

Research shows that 34% of Lyme patients have symptoms after treatment. Many doctors and scientists believe that the persistence of bacteria is the cause of these long-term symptoms, so while the CDC calls it “post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome,” many experts believe that the term “persistent Lyme disease” is more accurate. | These studies demonstrate a continuous transmission, giving validity to the term.
Lyme Disease Ticks Produce Antibiotic That Protects Them From Human Skin Bacteria
First discovered in New England (Lyme, CT), the disease has spread across the country, with hotspots in the Northwest and coastal California.
On the West Coast, the main carrier is the western black tick, or Ixodes pacificus, and the main host is the gray squirrel. (This is in contrast to the East Coast, where the eastern black tick, Ixodes scapularis, is the main carrier and the whitefoot rat is the main host.) The western black tick has been detected in infected ticks in only two countries (56 in total) and 42 counties in California.
The current “gold standard” diagnosis for Lyme disease is a two-level ELISA/Western blot blood test that measures human antibodies.
. This diagnostic is an indirect measure of infection by detecting the body’s immune response to infection rather than detecting the Lyme virus itself. This misses 50% of cases of early-stage Lyme disease, as it can take weeks for the body to develop measurable antibodies against infection. Professional educators in traditional classrooms and non-traditional teaching situations require specialized and available materials and tools to teach students about tick-bit prevention.

As former Harvard division golfers, my brother and I wish we had been educated about the dangers associated with Lyme disease and the prevalence of ticks across the United States and prevention of bites. Few golfers seem to be aware of the dangers and even fewer are taking precautions, and it is imperative that we change that.

Golf courses are nests of fleas that can carry Lyme disease. Taxa thrive in forests and open spaces, which are the true terrain of golf courses, and live on the small forest animals that often inhabit golf courses. Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States with at least 476,000 new cases each year.
Chief Business Officer Jason Etzen said, “It is heartbreaking how many people in the Gulf community are suffering from symptoms of chronic Lyme disease, and this disease is a risk to all of our members.” “Given the amount of time golfers spend in areas of high tick activity, we have a strong responsibility to ensure our members are knowledgeable about tick-borne disease so that they can prevent it and start their fight against tick-borne disease at an early age. .”
According to research presented in 2014 at the American Public Health Association, nearly a quarter of golfers were diagnosed with Lyme disease, but 72% of golfers did not use pesticides. Another study conducted by the University of Rhode Island found that 75% of fleas found on 50 golf courses carried the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

Symptoms of early-stage Lyme disease include headaches, flu-like symptoms, joint pain, fatigue, and sometimes a bull-shaped rash centered on a tick bite. Knowing the symptoms of Lyme disease is very important because the current “gold standard” diagnosis for Lyme disease misses Lyme disease in up to 60% of cases. Because of the difficulties in diagnosing and treating Lyme disease, more than two million people suffer from subsequent symptoms.
Ticks can carry viruses and bacteria as well as parasites, which can cause a number of diseases, including anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Borrelia miyamotoi, Lyme disease, Powassan disease, rickettsiosis, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF).
The most common vector-borne disease in the country, Lyme disease is a potentially disabling infection that is transmitted to humans and pets through the bite of an infected tick. If caught early, most cases of Lyme disease can be treated effectively, but it is usually misdiagnosed due to lack of awareness and unreliable diagnostic tests. About 500,000 new cases of Lyme disease occur each year, according to statistics released in 2018 by the CDC. Because of the difficulties in diagnosing and treating Lyme disease, more than two million Americans may suffer the effects of debilitating long-term symptoms and complications, according to the Bay Area Lyme Foundation.
