National sports brand Amart Sports will open at the Bunnings complex on Saturday, just 10 days after more than 30 jobs were announced as part of the Gateway Plaza expansion.

WARRNAMBOOL’S Riley Malone has never missed work and his employers say they couldn’t have a more loyal member of staff.
The 22-year-old is one of hundreds of disabled people finding work in Warrnambool, federal government statistics show.

Simon Nolan, assistant head of boating, fishing and camping, admitted he believed Riley might be in trouble, but said those worries were soon proved wrong.
“We thought there might be some challenges and we gave him simple jobs, but now he pretty much does what any other casual employee would do,” Mr Nolan said.
“I’m actually proud of Riley, he’s done a really good job, we didn’t know what to expect, but he fits in well.”
Riley, who has an intellectual disability and was offered the job by the employment agency EGF, said his job involved looking after stock, stocking shelves and sometimes helping customers.

“I think people love Riley so much that they’re willing to do what’s asked of them,” Ms Bell said. “Their passion is there, they want to work, but it’s just about giving them the opportunity to prove that they can do the job like everyone else.”
The federal Department of Social Services awarded $3.76 million in the 2017-18 financial year to six Warrnambool organizations that provide disability employment services.
The 349 people from Warrnambool who received funding from the program provided 426 jobs, meaning 18 percent of the jobs were not accepted long-term for various reasons.
The Employment Service supports the job seeker for 52 weeks, but participants have access to ongoing support if they are unable to leave the program and work independently.

Of the 349 jobseekers who started working as DES participants in 2017-18, 171 are still receiving assistance from a DES provider, a department spokesperson said.
“Providers don’t just get paid to hire someone. They actually have to stay in that job for a period of time, which is a year,” Mr Haynes said.
“People do go out of work because their condition worsens … but it could be for other reasons, moving or going back to school.”
“Don’t expect too much too soon, like any employee you have to improve over time. And just be patient,” he said.
