The Asus RT-AC88U router has ultra-fast 8 Gigabit LAN ports, fast Wi-Fi performance and many useful features. The web interface is smartly designed and easy to use.
The router’s USB 3.0 port is critical, and when combined with an external hard drive, NAS performance is only average.
You have to pay a lot for the Asus RT-AC88U, but it has everything you would want in a router. If you have the money, this is a router.
It is the first home router to have 8 Gigabit LAN ports with additional support for dual WAN (one LAN port can be converted into a WAN port) and port aggregation (two LAN ports can be combined into one high speed connection).

Other than that, it has a powerful and easy-to-use web interface, many great network monitoring features, a built-in VPN server, and the ability to protect your home network from malware and hackers. The router also supports MU-MIMO and includes features unique to gamers. Overall, I’ve never seen a router that offers more than the RT-AC88U.
In terms of performance, the router outperformed in my tests, offering the best Wi-Fi data rates, long distances, and stable wireless signals. If you’re in the market for a high-end home router with few compromises, the RT-AC88U is a good choice. But at $280, it’s not cheap. But if you have the money, it is worth the investment. Especially for users with high requirements. (Prices in the UK and Australia have not been announced, but prices in the US are around £185 and A$390 at current exchange rates.) Also available is the Netgear X8 AC5300 router or Asus’ own AC5300 router, RT-AC5300. Each has a high price, but offers very little.

The naming convention for Wi-Fi routers has always been confusing. Since the introduction of the 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard, there have been many Wi-Fi designations such as AC1750, AC1900, AC3200, AC5300…and now there is the new AC3100. To make matters worse — D-Link actually calls the AC3150.
The number after “AC” represents the total bandwidth of the router’s Wi-Fi network. The company calculates this number by adding up the maximum speed for each band on the router. For example, an AC1900 router like the Asus RT-AC68U has a maximum speed of 300Mbps in the 5GHz band and 600Mbps in the 2.4GHz band. Add those two numbers together and you get 1900. Most routers are dual-band (meaning they have two bands, one at 5GHz and one at 2.4GHz), but some routers come with an extra band at 5GHz. Frequency, aptly named as a “tri-band” router. No matter how many bands your router has, your device will only connect to one band at a time. This is one of the reasons the AC assignment numbers are misleading because they do not indicate the speed at which a single customer can connect to the router.
So, what is the speed of the AC3100? As you can see from the above graph, the AC3100 router is just as fast as the AC5300 router, and they both share the same maximum speeds in the 5GHz bands of 2,167Mbps at 2.4GHz and 1000Mbps. These are only the maximum paper speeds. In practical use, the actual continuous speed of the Wi-Fi connection is always much lower than the theoretical speed.
The RT-AC88U uses the Broadcom NitroQAM chipset, which is the same chipset used in current AC5300 routers such as the RT-AC5300 or Netgear R8500. The only difference is that the RT-AC88U does not have an additional 5GHz band. However, the only time I find a difference between an AC3100 router and an AC5300 router in terms of Wi-Fi speed is when there are more than 10 active 5GHz clients on the same network. In this case, the AC5300 router can support more simultaneous clients without slowing down thanks to the two 5GHz bands.

The RT-AC88U supports Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) technology designed to efficiently handle Wi-Fi bandwidth. MU-MIMO was first introduced with the Qualcomm MU/EFX 802.11AC Wi-Fi chip. However, the RT-AC88U uses Broadcom’s first Wi-Fi chip to support this technology.
Before MU-MIMO, all 802.11ac routers treated all Wi-Fi clients the same way, regardless of Wi-Fi power. Since routers usually have more Wi-Fi capacity than clients, the router is rarely used for some wireless connections at its full capacity. For this reason, routers waste power on lower tier clients and most Wi-Fi connections are ineffective if they don’t have enough power to maintain a quality connection to multiple clients.

MU-MIMO allows multiple simultaneous transmissions on different Wi-Fi layers to be sent to multiple devices at the same time, allowing each client to communicate at the desired speed. In other words, having a MU-MIMO Wi-Fi network is like having multiple wireless routers with different Wi-Fi layers. Each of these “routers” is for each device layer in the network, so that multiple devices can communicate with each other at the same time without slowing down.
MU-MIMO has been rapidly adopted by both routers and customers, and it is expected that by the end of next year most new Wi-Fi devices will support this technology.

The new RT-AC88U looks almost identical to the RT-AC87U with 4 detachable antennas and 2 USB ports. And like its bigger brother, the RT-AC88U has a USB 2.0 port on the back and a USB 3.0 port on the front, so it’s not an ideal location. This is because USB 3.0 ports are preferred for hosting permanent storage devices due to their much faster speeds. So having this port on top is confusing when you want to use your router also as a network storage server.

However, there is one big difference with the RT-AC88U. It now has 8 gigabit LAN ports (as opposed to the 4 you see on most other routers). In fact, it is the first home router with this number of LAN ports. This is a huge improvement considering it has the same physical size as the RT-AC87U. More LAN ports mean more wired clients such as servers or printers can connect to the router before the switch is used.
The LAN port of the RT-AC88U has more. The first two ports can be combined to provide a super-fast 2Gbps connection (a bonus if you’re using a high-end NAS server). One of the first four ports can be used as the second WAN (Internet) port. This means that if you have two broadband connections (for example, one cable and one DSL connection), you can use both with a router to make sure your network is always online. You can also use the router’s USB port to host a USB cellular dongle for users who want to share their cellular broadband connection with the rest of the network.
RT-AC88U has a typical setup process for a web interface router. All you have to do is connect the router and point the browser on the connected computer to the router’s default IP address (192.168.1.1). Initially, the interface displays a web-based wizard that walks you through a few steps, including creating a password for the interface itself and for your Wi-Fi network.
After the initial setup, you can use the interface to manage your router. This interface is the best I’ve ever seen
