Can You Put Vinyl Flooring Over Hardwood

Can You Put Vinyl Flooring Over Hardwood – If you’re tired of looking at old-fashioned ceramic tiles but don’t have the time (or budget) to demo old floors, there are actually several types of flooring that can be laid directly over ugly old tiles. Today I am sharing different types of flooring that can be placed directly on top of the tile. No demonstration needed!…

In an ideal world I would have replaced all the nasty a$$ bottoms on my previous fixtures before moving a box of my possessions in.

Unfortunately at the time I was basically broke and had no spare change to do something like that.

How Much Does It Cost To Install Engineered Hardwood Floor?

Eight years ago, floating floor systems such as LVT or LVP had not yet developed into today’s systems that use them explicitly for installation over existing sub-floors. In fact, the only option I knew at the time was the tedious, messy job of tearing up the old floor and then paying a hefty premium to subcontractors to install the new floor.

So… I lived with the floor I absolutely despise for about 4 years. That is… until I discovered a click-and-lock floor system that the manufacturer’s instructions claim can be placed right over the dirty ceramic tile in the kitchen.

Since that discovery, I’ve used two different types of flooring in the same way over ranchers in the 1980s, so I’d like to use this post to show you the many options available for this unconventional type of application.

LVT was our first foray into the world of floating floors. As you can see in the picture above, my husband and I used quality vinyl tiles to cover the old fashioned ceramic tiles in the kitchen (you can read my LVT installation tutorial here).

The beauty of LVT is that it is waterproof (unlike traditional solid wood), which makes it suitable for areas prone to water exposure. I also found the product to be very low maintenance given the lack of grout and the inevitable problem of dark joint lines with traditional tiles.

The installation of this product is relatively beginner friendly, and I was able to completely change the look of my kitchen in just one weekend.

Not all premium vinyl tiles are suitable for installation over existing tile, so you should check that the manufacturer’s instructions specifically say “suitable for installation over existing tile sub-flooring.”

What Does It Cost To Install Floating Wood Floor In 2023?

If your LVT floor isn’t thick enough, you risk a full-body effect where the ceramic tile joint lines will start to show through the new floor, giving it a not-so-cute look.

Luxury vinyl tiles and luxury vinyl planks are essentially the same product. Both are waterproof and do not require grouting or caulking, but the premium vinyl planks come in longer sections and are more ideal for a wood-like effect.

You might think you installed tile in your bathroom, but this particular type of click-and-lock floor was actually plank.

As with LVT, you need to make sure the premium vinyl plank product you use with it is padded thick enough to avoid bodily hazards. From a distance, you’d never guess that the floor in my bathroom (you can read more about my bathroom here) isn’t actually tile.

Does Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring Require Underlayment?

Two years ago, when Shaw Floors wanted to work with me on a brand new type of engineered hardwood that could be installed over tile and hardwood floors, like LVT or LVP, I was completely blown away.

I decided to install engineered hardwood siding in my front door (which has rough, ugly ceramic tile), dining room, living room, and bedroom (which has solid wood that looks like it came straight out of the living room).

What’s even better about floating wood planks is that they are waterproof and scratch resistant. The advantage of this over LVT and LVP is that when I went to sell my house this year I could brag in my MLS description that I had new hardwood floors throughout the house.

Floating hardwood planks may cost a bit more than their high-end vinyl counterparts, but if you have resale value in mind, this is definitely something you want to consider.

Installing Vinyl Flooring Over Ceramic Tile

Given the state of the art of this product, it may be the only hardwood option on the market that can be installed over a tile floor. At least this is the only product of its kind I have seen.

Personally, I have never used cushioned laminate flooring, but it is similar to most vinyl products in that it is DIY friendly and has a similar look.

The main difference between vinyl and laminate (at least in terms of functionality) is that vinyl is completely synthetic and laminate is not.

Laminate has a core made up of wood byproducts, so it is not the best choice for rooms that are subject to water exposure, such as bathrooms and kitchens.

However, if you want the look and feel of a wood floor, the aesthetics of laminate may be a little more compelling.

As with any product, you should check whether the manufacturer has marked it as suitable for installation on tiles. All laminates are not created equal!

Having lived with LVT, LVP and floating hardwood planks for years, I can personally attest that these are all very durable options and have had no problems with the whole body.

With so many flooring options to choose from (a technology so far away), we hope you now know there are no more excuses for living with ugly tile floors!

Things To Know About Peel And Stick Flooring

It’s like having your own interior designer, life coach (and drinking buddy) for free. AF lives nicely on a budget. So, as a stopgap, I was ready to put some adhesive vinyl tile over my horrible, crumbling kitchen vinyl floor. But tonight, when I removed the first threshold transition, I saw that the vinyl seemed to be attached to the thin hardwood floor rather than the solid wood below. Are you kidding me that I think it would actually be relatively easy to lift an entire floor and go straight to a wood kitchen floor if it was messy? Do not install temporary vinyl flooring in the first place. Obviously, hardwood still needs to be varnished, but it seems a shame to add another layer on top when hardwood is *too close*.

I’d love to see how you do it. We have the exact same situation in our kitchen. It’s a bit of ugly linoleum you can see over the plywood. I hope they didn’t ruin the hardwood floors below. But I’m saving it for a winter project…

One thing to check is if the floor and plywood go under the cabinets. If so, cut the layers from the cabinet. Or remove the cabinet and open a large can of worms.

Your situation is the same as ours throughout the house. In all cases, the original floor underneath was in relatively good condition, with only a few boards needing to be replaced, a good sanding to smooth out the crown and shoulders inside it, and removal of all the crappy, flaky, dry topcoat. Our original floors were nailed all over, so we had to hammer each nail head about 1/8 inch deeper into the wood before sanding to keep the drum tape from tearing. The floors may be different.

Personally, I’d say take the plunge. Seeing the original floors cleaned is well worth it.

We will return the vinyl records to the store! All the cabinets will come out eventually. With only a small bank along one wall, it does not take up much space to install. But still they are terrible and will be replaced at some point…

The only vinyl records I have used have lasted a full 2 weeks total. Then I started peeling. I vowed never to use it again! That puts it on par with click laminate, the only other building material I’ve made this promise about. They usually won’t survive being installed without a chip.

Mine was glued to the plate, not the asbestos 9×9 plate but underneath.
