I was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania when my father was an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University. I grew up with most of my early education through higher education in India and traveled a lot as a child/teenager. I completed my veterinary degree at the Madras Veterinary College in Madras, India and completed my ECFVG in 1989. I then worked at a small veterinary clinic in Antioch, CA while applying for residency. In the late 1990s, I moved to Southern California to begin a second residency in Emergency and Critical Care. I was exposed to amazing doctors and was able to improve my skills and knowledge. Since then, I have been active in academic and private professional activities in the critical care setting to advance the advancement of medicine and the education of students, interns, and residents. I love both first aid and intensive care. I am satisfied with surgical case management and soft tissue surgery. I am trained in abdominal ultrasound and echocardiography. I specialize in minimally invasive procedures and enjoy giving injections, etc. Pacemaker implantation is especially important in the emergency department. I am excited to be in Southern Oregon and look forward to making a positive contribution to animal health care in this region.

Renee Self grew up on a farm on the California border in Siskiyou County, and among the many animals she learned about at a young age, she loved animals big and small. He spent a lot of time in Jackson County and the surrounding areas with his family growing up and got to know the area and the culture.

With over two decades of experience in marketing, Renee brings a unique perspective to the leadership team as she joins the marketing team as the new Communications Manager. He has run his own company for over fifteen years and has planned entertainment and business events. He is excited to bring his years of experience to his new role at the hospital.
In her spare time, Renee enjoys spending time with family and friends, her dog Roxy, and volunteering in the community at Pear Blossom and City of Medford fundraisers.
Dr. Rory Applegate is a new member of the internal medicine department at Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center. He uses many aspects of internal medicine in his work and really connects with his clients and patients.
Dr. Applegate graduated from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011 and went on to small animal clinical practice at the University of Wisconsin College of Veterinary Medicine. He then completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Applegate also worked on various research projects, published in several journals, and gave many professional presentations.

Dr. Applegate also spent much of her time volunteering. She has volunteered her time to trap feral cats, help care for shelter pets, and devoted time to an international healthcare practice. Her professionalism, dedication and love for animals make her a perfect addition to the team at Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center.
Dr. attended. Dana Hoyt in the emergency room. He worked as a licensed veterinarian in Klamath Falls for 7 years after receiving his bachelor’s degree in animal science/agribusiness and management from Oregon State University. After completing his DVM, Dr. Hoyt moved to Northern California, where he enrolled in the small animal clinical program at VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group.
Dr. returned. Hoyt in Southern Oregon after completing her internship in June 2007 and joined the VCA Jackson Animal Hospital where she provided excellent care to her patients for 10 years.
Dr. Fugazzi has been interested in medicine since his youth. Early donations to the Houston Zoo, several animal hospitals, marine science centers, and rescue organizations aided a lifelong effort to provide the deepest and most comprehensive assistance to animals in need.

His formal education began at Texas A&M University, where he studied biomechanical engineering and cardiovascular system development. Veterinary school followed, and he was promoted to one of the best jobs in the world. After graduating in 1999 with a DVM and veterinary medicine degree, he practiced general medicine and surgery in several small animal practices in Southern Oregon and Colorado. After ten years of practice, he was able to obtain an internship at a private specialty hospital in Loveland, Colorado, and then a surgical residency at Washington State University. Researching small animal and soft tissue surgery has given him a special interest in pathology, oncological surgery and minimally invasive surgery such as arthroscopy and laparoscopy. He spent the last 3 years developing his skills in Calgary, Alberta (Canada) while raising a small family and spending as much time as possible in the Canadian Rockies. He has decided to return to the Rogue Valley as a board certified surgeon and work with the Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center team.
Dr. attended. Cheryl Croley at Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center in 2006. She brings years of experience as a general practitioner and emergency room/nurse. Dr. Croley is a graduate of the Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Croley began working at a small, busy animal hospital in Southern California, where he practiced general medicine for five years. He was then introduced to emergency medicine at an area emergency clinic and found it interesting and rewarding. To gain more experience, Dr. Croley stationed in Northern California at a specialized 24-hour hospital in intensive care. He began to understand the care of critical patients after the first 24 hours of injury or illness.
Dr. was born. Reiss and grew up in New York. He graduated from the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell in 1993. After graduation, he completed a small animal internship at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital and an emergency and critical care residency at Denver Veterinary Specialists. Dr. Reiss became an ER and Critical Care Practitioner in October 2002. Dr. Reiss was involved in the growth and development of two large 24-hour emergency centers and locations in Denver, Seattle, Medford and Portland. He published an article on traumatic heart injuries and book chapters on topics such as dystocia and pneumonia. Dr. Reiss has special interests in trauma, injectable medicine, nutritional support and pulmonary disease.
Dr. moved. Reiss lives in Medford, Seattle with his wife, Dawn, their daughters, Alexys and Makayla, their son, Deryk, and numerous pets. His hobbies outside of medicine include woodworking, snowmobiling and classic cars. Dr. moved. Reiss in Southern Oregon for providing animal services not previously available in the area and enjoying the many different activities in the area.
A 24/7 Emergency And Specialty Animal Hospital
Dr. Ferreira is originally from Arizona but grew up in Houston, Texas. He received his DVM degree from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1994. He was in private practice in Seattle and Houston for three years before completing a small animal surgery residency at Denver Veterinary Specialists. During his residency, Dr. Ferreira and published a clinical study on the effect of gas plasma oxidation on the permeability of bone matrix grafts at Colorado State University. In February 2002, he became a board certified member of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. After three years as a staff surgeon at several medical practices in Denver, Dr. Ferreira moved to Medford to help found the Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center. Dr. Ferreira’s expertise includes general surgery, trauma and fractures, TPLO fixation for cranial cruciate ligament injuries, spinal surgery for herniated discs, and four specialty treatments for breathing problems.
Dr. Ferreira lives in the Medford area with his wife, daughters and their Chihuahua. In his spare time, he enjoys family life, golf, reading, hiking, snowshoeing, music and fly fishing.
John Davies, DVM, DACVS-SA, has joined the Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center as our newest surgeon. John’s training and hands-on experience will greatly benefit our team and the people and pets of Southern Oregon.
For two years, John was the lead surgeon at Silicon Valley Veterinary Specialists in San Jose, where he was responsible for organizing the surgical service in a start-up practice environment. From there, he worked as a surgical assistant at Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital.

John was surrounded by animals all his life. John grew up on his family’s farm near Toronto, Canada, where his parents ran a large sheep operation that supplied ewes and pregnant lambs to research hospitals. John’s upbringing greatly influenced his future endeavors. In 2001, he graduated from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, where he earned a B.A.
