Custom Timber Windows Kyneton – Timber construction and hand-crafted wood are on display throughout the interior of this compact home in Osaka Prefecture, Japan by Hitotomori Architecture Studio (+ view).
Hitotomori collaborated with fellow studio Hane-Kenchiku-Koubou onT-intersection Fence House, which provides a home for a family of four on a plot of land in Matsubara accompanied by three other properties.

In response to this surrounded environment, the architects gave the small two-story residence a rugged metal exterior, but chose to create a warmer aesthetic on the inside with exposed raw wood.

“The hand-crafted wooden structure and highly detailed carpentry give this building an appearance of true beauty,” said founders Hitotomori Tomoko and Yoshiaki Nagasaka.
The building is less than 80 square meters, with an open ground floor containing all the living spaces and a private mezzanine above.
To give residents a small private outdoor space, the building’s perimeter fence is a full-height wall covered in corrugated metal that acts as a false facade. Behind it, the real facade of the building can open to a small terrace.
“The light also passes between the top of the fence and the eaves of the house and is diffused by the leaves of the trees, creating an effect that you would not expect from the dark surroundings.”

At the front of the space, there is a family dining table between a small kitchen and a banquette that forms the hall.
All these pieces of furniture were custom made using plywood, with a stainless steel worktop in the kitchen and leather upholstery on the counter.
The built-in furniture continues to the back of the space where the floor drops to create a traditional Japanese space covered with tatami.
A staircase built at the back of the library leads to a small upper floor containing two bedrooms.

The pitched roof creates high ceilings at the front of the house. Internal windows allow views down into these living spaces from the rooms above, but can be obscured by wooden shutters.
“It is the modulation of light and shade and the way the wind passes through the house that gives the Fence House its individual character and creates a rich living environment,” added the architects.
Hitotomori is one of the many studios that have chosen plywood interiors to create a warm look while keeping costs down.
