The world’s longest nonstop flight has been reduced to a long journey with one stopover due to fuel shortages at Auckland Airport.

Qatar Airways flight 921 is scheduled to cover the 9,025 miles from New Zealand’s largest city to Doha in 18 hours. But due to what Auckland Airport calls a “temporary fuel supply disruption”, he stopped in Australia last week to fill up his tanks – normally adding three hours to his journey time.
Qantas Is Restarting Flights To New York In 2023 — And Starting A New Direct Route From Auckland
A pipeline between New Zealand’s only oil refinery at Marsden Point and the depot that supplies airlines operating at Auckland Airport has been damaged. As a result, only about a third of normal usage is delivered, and oil companies ration the amount of fuel they supply.
Pilots on short flights, such as domestic flights or hops across the Tasman Sea to eastern Australia, can ‘refuel’ and arrive in Auckland with enough on board to operate the return journey. But many long-haul flights have to make unscheduled stops shortly after takeoff from the city to refuel.
Last week Qatar Airways daily Boeing 777 to Doha landed primarily in Adelaide, but some services landed in Melbourne. Both Australian airports are off the most direct route between Auckland and Doha, meaning the journey is longer.
The world’s second-longest flight also begins in Auckland: Emirates’ nonstop journey to Dubai, 8,817 miles away. The Airbus A380 used for the service was refueled in Melbourne or Brisbane.

Time spent going down, on the ground, and back up again usually adds two or three hours to the trip. It also increases costs by tens of thousands of pounds, with extra fuel burn, landing charges and wear and tear on airframe and engines.
In addition, passengers who miss connections due to longer journeys must have alternative hotels and flights.
Fuel shortages also cause fleet allocation problems, with round trips often taking several hours longer than planned. There are also crew issues, with long-haul flights on Qatar Airways and Emirates becoming even longer stopovers that require additional crew to avoid breaking flight time restrictions.
Air New Zealand is the airline most affected by the fuel crisis. It managed to keep its main Auckland-London service on schedule, with Boeing 777s refueling over 6,500 miles to a stopover in Los Angeles.

Other services, such as the recent Auckland-Houston return, have been cancelled, with the daily trip to Hong Kong refueling in Brisbane.
In recent days, Air New Zealand has avoided cancellations. The airline says it “continues to implement various measures to mitigate the fuel surge in Auckland, including some international long-haul services, which stop for fuel at airports in Australia or the Pacific Islands.”
Air New Zealand says it believes the “situation is stabilizing and will remain manageable unless further complications arise”.
Qantas took extreme measures to fly a refueled Boeing 747 from Sydney to Auckland to refuel planes bound for Australia.
