Flight To Bhutan From Us

Flight To Bhutan From Us – Bhutan is a mysterious country full of natural beauty. Miraculously, the country still retains most of its original Buddhist culture and tradition. But there’s a reason the British could never incorporate it into their empire, and with it India: Bhutan is just so hard to get to.

On the northern side the Himalayas form a natural barrier of 20,000 feet and higher, while everything else is nothing but incredibly steep valleys completely covered with dense rain forest. Even today, only three roads lead to the land of the Thunder Dragon. So how to get to Bhutan?

Flight To Bhutan From Us

Before the last trip, I did a lot of research on different options. Unfortunately, there is not that much detailed information around, that’s why I wrote this little travel guide (I also wrote a guide about 20 tourist places in Bhutan, which you can find here). What worked for me may not work for you (really depends on your flight schedule and where you’re coming from) but I hope all the information I’ve gathered here will allow you to come to your own conclusion.

Kolkata To Bhutan By Train, Plane, Bus, Car

Also, be sure to read my guide on the best time to visit Bhutan, as I won’t cover that topic in this guide.

Well, there are three standard ways for tourists to enter Israel and I will take a detailed look at the different options. Residents of SAARC countries have several different options. Since now most of my readers come from the US and Western Europe, I won’t mention it.

All other travelers can decide to take a plane from Delhi, Kathmandu or Bangkok to Paro International Airport in Bhutan. As this airport is probably the most difficult and dangerous airport in the world, only domestic air carriers are allowed to land. All travelers require a visa.

I will talk about the pros and cons of the different methods in detail below. Your main pastime, for now, should be: unless you live in these cities, there are no direct commercial flights to Bhutan. There are also infrequent flights from Bangladesh and Singapore.

I would check with your travel agent – sometimes they can get you a bargain. I booked a flight with Aman (the luxury way to travel in Bhutan). You can read my review of their cabin here.

There is one important thing you should know in advance: flights to Faro airport are only possible in good weather. Pilots use visual flight rules where autopilot is not available. This basically means that flights are delayed (or even canceled) when the weather is bad. For the same reason, night flights are also not possible.

Faro Airport is surrounded by high mountains on all sides and the pilot has to fly in a moving line. The landing field is not visible to him until the last moment. It’s quite scary, because sometimes it feels like the wings of the plane are almost touching the mountain.

Currently, only five pilots in the world are authorized to land in Faro. Consequently, you can fly with DrukAir or Bhutan Airlines (which are basically the same). There are no cheap flights to Bhutan.

There is another consequence: DrukAir only has 3 long-haul aircraft. So the plane will go from Paro to Kolkata tomorrow, then back directly to Paro and only then will it be able to fly onward to Bangkok etc. While there is congestion, heavy delays will lead to delays in the entire schedule.

There is no visa on arrival, so before planning your trip to Bhutan you must deal with the visa requirements. Western tourists cannot apply for a visa themselves. The powered tour should request this for you. Therefore, I should mention that you cannot visit Bhutan without a guide.

The visa process is quite simple and basically you just need to fill out a form and email it to the travel agency a month before your trip, including your itinerary. You will then receive a small visa document that you need to print out and carry with you at all times. And it really is. does not include payment.

The most popular way to reach Bhutan is from Delhi. There is a daily connecting flight to Indira Gandhi International Airport with Faro. The flight time is a comfortable 2 hours and 30 minutes and the distance is about 1,200 km. Bhutan has very good relations with India, so the immigration process is quite simple.

Bhutan Trip Cost: Is Bhutan Worth $250 The A Day Fee?

I personally flew over Delhi via Abu Dhabi, as it had the shortest flight time (read the Etihad Airways review if you’re interested). Flying is very stressful and I think it’s really important to minimize your time on the plane as much as possible. Since India allows fairly cheap tourist visas, I don’t think immigration is a big deal anymore.

Best of all, international flights to Delhi are usually very cheap, making this option probably the cheapest of all. Also, this is the largest airport, so you can choose from a wide range of airlines according to your personal preferences and preferred flight times.

There are also regular flights from Guwahati, Gaya, Bagdogra and Kolkata, but these are not daily and probably less ideal as international flights.

Alternatively, you can also reach Bhutan from Kathmandu. By the way, my flight to Delhi made a short stop in Kathmandu on the way back, so it’s basically the same flight. The distance is only 400 kilometers and the flight takes about one hour and 20 minutes.

Flight Ticket Booking In Brunei

Generally, there are no direct flights to Kathmandu from most western airports. However, a stopover in Dubai, Qatar or Abu Dhabi can be a good way to break up a long flight into smaller, more manageable legs. It really comes down to personal preference and which airlines you want to fly.

It seems that the easiest and hassle-free way to get to Bhutan is from Bangkok Thailand. This is mainly due to the fact that you don’t need a visa, so you’ll go through immigration like a breeze.

On the contrary, a quick glance at the map will reveal quite quickly that this means a flight of about 2,500 kilometers across Bhutan. As a result, you will also spend considerably more time on the plane (unless you arrive in Oceania or East Asia).

There are two flights a week from Singapore. While the Singapore airport is a dream, it’s probably only an option for Australians, Japanese nationals, etc. And even then it’s probably cheaper to fly through Bangkok as the connection to Singapore is incredibly expensive.

As I have already mentioned above, there is a land route into Bhutan and I want to mention it quickly. While the main roads in Bhutan are generally in pretty decent condition, it’s important to note that due to Bhutan’s unique geography, the roads don’t take you directly to places.

Bridges are often not an option (they had to fill a gap in a 2 kilometer chasm), so you end up driving all over the valley. However, the most popular way to get to Bhutan by car is via Phuentsholing.

For Indian tourists, this is often a cheap option, although it takes about 6 hours to get from Puntsuling to the capital, Thimphu. But for western tourists, I’m not sure how suitable this route is. There are buses from Darjeeling to Puentsholing and the nearest airport would be in Bagdogra.

Samdrup Jongkhar and Gelephu in the southeast will be the other two border towns where your guide (you can’t go inland without one) can meet you. But again, unless you’re planning a long road trip in Northeast India, the overland route probably isn’t worth it (and not cheaper).

You should also know that the roads in Bhutan can be incredibly beautiful at times. But at other times they are incredibly dangerous. This will be something you will have to deal with whether you fly or not but decide for yourself if you want to increase the load.

In short: Delhi and Kathmandu are the best ways to get to Bhutan from the US and Europe.
