Air New Zealand completed the first flight approved for extended twin-engine operations (ETOPS) lasting 330 minutes, operating a 777-200ER with Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines. The flight departed Auckland, New Zealand on December 1 and landed in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. Ayres, in about 12 hours.

The 330-minute ETOPS permit allows Air New Zealand to fly its Rolls-Royce-powered 777-200ER aircraft up to 330 minutes from diversion airports, allowing for more direct flights, lower fuel consumption and lower emissions. The first flight marked the completion of the configuration and operational requirements set by the United States Federal Aviation Administration and the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority.

In December 2011, Boeing announced that it had received FAA approval of an ETOPS design type of up to 330 minutes for the 777, initially for the 777 with the General Electric GE90 engine. The manufacturer received FAA approval for 330-minute ETOPS on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 2014.
Air New Zealand began 240-minute ETOPS flights with the 777-200ER and Rolls-Royce Trent engines in October 2014. It flew long-haul routes for a year before receiving the 330-minute approval last month. A Qantas Dreamliner from Buenos Aires landed in Darwin on Wednesday evening, completing the longest commercial route in the airline’s 100-year history.
The featured route was a repatriation flight for Australian citizens, which was the return leg of a charter flight bringing the Argentina rugby team home from the Rugby Championship in Queensland.

This is the longest route ever operated by a Qantas vessel, beating the previous record from London to Perth by another 200km.

“Qantas has always faced challenges, especially when it comes to long-haul travel,” said Captain Alex Passerini, who thanked the flight planning team.
