Singapore Airlines flights to Canberra and Wellington will not return even as international travel restrictions ease, with the airline departing from both national capitals.

The withdrawal also means the end of Singapore Airlines’ trans-Tasman flights, as Wellington was connected to Singapore via Melbourne.

“This decision is extremely difficult given the hard work that has gone into our partners over the past few years to build successful operations on both destinations,” said Singapore Airlines Regional Vice President Southwest Pacific Philip Goh.

“But it is necessary because we predict that the demand for travel will decrease for a long time. Australia and New Zealand continue to be important markets for the SIA Group and we remain firmly committed to ensuring that the two countries remain connected through our Singapore hub.”

While Singapore Airlines will not return its own aircraft to the capitals, both cities will continue to be served under codeshare agreements with Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand.
