Flights From Sfo To Syd – Here are notes from the first half of my whirlwind trip to Sydney, Australia in United Business Class to finish the 2020 1K event… and of course, a cup of coffee.
I went straight from the Christmas concert to the Burbank airport in time to get to San Francisco. Little did I know that if that flight hadn’t (eventually) been delayed, I’d be facing a 40-minute delay on the ground, missing my connection to Sydney.

As my flight to Sydney was delayed relatively late, I visited the United Polaris Lounge in the International Terminal. At 23:00 it is usually empty and the restaurant is closed. The buffet had a few hot and cold options, but apart from the cheese, nothing really stood out.
I also love the cucumber-infused Moscow Mule, which hits the spot after running from Gate F to the resort.
A man yelled at the doorman, asking to speak to the manager. Even when I’m tempted to stay around and watch all these games, I’m just up… At that point I’m ready for bed.

I have to admit that this flight let me down… and it wasn’t a long delay. But maybe it’s just me…
A good Polaris seat. I’ve reviewed it before and didn’t take pictures from different angles this time. I appreciate that United is able to provide access to all passengers without compromising cabin speed.

I didn’t sleep nearly as much as I would have liked. We left at 1:00, finished dinner at 2:30, and I was up 6 hours later, which is pretty good considering my body clock usually wakes me up at 5-6am with or without an alarm. I just can’t sleep anymore…part of it must be the stress I’ve been dealing with. It’s a very good match so it’s not a big deal.

Also, part of the suite was fixed with tape. I hope this is not a sign of things to come…
The food is also good. Trying to branch out a bit, I ordered lemon juice salmon with coconut red curry sauce and served with Thai coconut risotto and fried peppers, carrots and onions. It was different than I had seen, but actually tastier than I had hoped. Duck appetizer, salad and bread are standard fare.
Halfway through the flight I enjoyed a small bowl of lobster mac and cheese. Snacks are also available at the buffet in the center of the galley.
Before landing, I ate a cheese omelette, which many complained about, but I saw later. All the fruit is ripe, the cinnamon roll is amazing and I think it’s a great breakfast.

IFE and wi-fi work the same way. I watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which was really good except for the brutal violence in every Quentin Tarantino movie.
Wi-Fi is slow but blazing every time I need to connect. The pass is $23.99, but I only need two hours of access, which I bought for $6.99.
Even the amenities are good. I’m not a Star Wars fan, but I think the Star Wars Striped Comforter Set is at least helpful for dark socks, pens, dental supplies, eyeshadows, and Sunday Riley treats. The only thing she was missing was a comb and I had forgotten mine.
So what’s the problem? I don’t want to blame these flight attendants, but I think half the problem is that they don’t provide enough tools for the job.

I mentioned this to the flight attendant and she understood that it was repeated but doesn’t it matter?
Perhaps what saddens me the most is that the flight attendants don’t really care. My drinks were not refilled and the flight attendant working my aisle forgot to give me bread with my meal until I asked for it.
It’s just the little things that can make another race great. No problem, but how about a little proactivity? Maybe my expectations were too high…

In September 2016, I flew United on an open-jaw ticket from Minneapolis to Sydney via San Francisco and Sydney to Detroit via San Francisco and Houston.

I got about five hours of sleep halfway through the flight, just after passing through the Hawaiian Islands, despite the intense heat.
