Fun 16th Birthday Party Ideas – I had so much fun planning a big, double 16th birthday party for my twins. After spending weeks going down the “Pinterest rabbit hole” picture after picture of party decoration ideas, themes, food, design and other details, I narrowed it all down and made a party plan!
Since the birthday party was for a boy and a girl, I didn’t want it to be mistaken for a Sweet Sixteen with lots of pink, so I went with neutrals of seafoam green, royal blue, white, and silver.

My first idea for a DIY craft was to use different sizes of “16” numbers for decorations. I bought flat, large wooden numbers from a local craft store. Then I took the photos out of my albums and copied them to a reduced size – (or you can reduce the size by printing on photocopy paper from your computer). I photocopied each large number and laid them out to cover the entire number. I used scissors to cut the edges and then used Mod Poge glue, followed the directions on the bottle and glued it to each number. After they were completely dry, I hung the numbers on the party wall and later brought them home to my study room as a fond memory.

I painted little numbers and hot glued them into frames and put some photos in them over the years. Finally, I painted two more sets of numbers and placed them on the tables.
The main focal point of the garage was used as a perfect spot for the color theme. I created a tablescape using boxes, crates, cake stands, tins, turned them upside down and placed all the desserts on top.
Chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes from my local bakery made it easy and I bought some creative candles to complement their cake (my son is a mathematician).
Party place. Every party needs a great venue that doesn’t cost a fortune. How about free? I cleaned out literally everything in my garage and put it in my backyard over the weekend. I swept and mopped the floor until it was relatively clean. We rented several tables, folding chairs, tablecloths for multiple colors and of course a small sofa for the “living area”. It doubled our party space!

To keep the party safe and private, we also rented a small party tent that we added to the garage. Here is the inside view. The tea light “candles” are actually battery operated lights that I bought at a local craft store. I put them on all the tables.
Balloons are creative and can add that final, special touch to your party. Instead of a “photo booth” or “photo wall,” I asked our local balloon company to build a “bubble wall” on one side of our garage. It was wonderful!
After all, what does every teenager really want in a birthday party? A crazy, ordinary photo booth? no. Their own personal SnapChat geotag/geofilter? Yes.
We ended up dancing and eating for hours! I won’t have to throw a big birthday party for them until they turn 21!
