For a cute theme perfect for a summer birthday, I love this cute 16 Luau Theme Party! Gold mylar balloons are perfect (go to a party store, you can find them in silver, gold and magenta).
Sixteen year olds love to take photos and memories, so I found this hand written chalkboard idea to create a party hashtag so friends can share photos and videos of the sweet 16th party! Then, the birthday girl can print out the photos and create a memorable birthday book. I had so much fun planning a huge 16th birthday party for my twins. After spending a few weeks going down the “Pinterest rabbit hole” taking picture after picture of party decor ideas, themes, food, design and other details, I turn it all around and make a party plan!
Since the birthday party was for a boy and a girl, I didn’t want it to be confusing with Sweet Sixteen and lots of pink, so I chose a neutral color of sea foam, blue , white and silver.
My first DIY idea was to use different sizes of the number “16” for decoration. I bought a large flat wooden scale at my local craft store. Then I took a photo from our album and copied it in a smaller size – (or you can print the photo from your computer in paper and reduce the size). I put the pictures in a large number each and laid them on the floor to cover the whole number. Cut out the parts with my scissors and glue with Mod Poge, follow the instructions on the bottle and cut them to each number. When it was completely dry, I hung the number on the hotel and brought them home later in our study as a nice souvenir.

I paint small numbers and hot glue them to frames and add some photos to them later. Finally, I draw two more numbers and put them on the table.
The center of the garage is used as a large space for color themes. I created a tablescape using boxes, racks, cake pans, pots, turned them on the ground and put desserts on top.
Chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes from my local bakery made it easy and I bought some designer candles to top their cupcakes (my son is a math guy).
Party space. Every festival needs a large space that does not cost a lot of money. How about free? I cleaned everything out of my garage and put it in our backyard this weekend. I scrubbed and scrubbed the floor until it was clean. We rented some tables, folding chairs, tablecloths for other colors and of course a small sofa for the “living room”. This doubled our party space!

To make the party more private and private, we also rented a small marquee to put up in the parking lot. This is a thought from within. The tea light “candles” are battery operated lights that I bought at my local craft store. I put them on all the tables.
Balloons are creative and can give your party that special final touch. Instead of a “photo booth” or “photo wall”, I had our balloon company create a “balloon wall” for one part of our garage. It’s beautiful!
Finally, what does every young person really want for their birthday party? Stupid, ordinary photo booth? No. Their, personalized SnapChat geotag/geofilter? Yes.
In the end, we danced and ate for hours! I don’t want to throw them a big birthday party until they turn 21!
