The Cruze turns in admirably thanks to its firm suspension and sits nice and flat in corners without any noticeable body roll.

While on the firm side, the ride is comfortable, you do feel some imperfections in the road, but they’re not distracting and the mid-corner bumpers aren’t slack.

The SRiV Cruze has a 132Kw 230nM 1.6L turbo 4cyl engine that sticks well on paper, but I found it lacking at low revs.

But then you get the revs on board and it proves to be a keen performer, and the 1.6-litre engine will happily return to redline in any gear.

At 10.5/100km, fuel economy is poor compared to other non-turbo small cars we’ve tested on similar trips.

All packed into a sedan or hatchback body with handling characteristics that would put even some of the “hot hatches” on the market to shame.

The four-pot likes to rev, and the sharp throttle response only works in its favour. Its 0-100 km/h sprint of 8.4 seconds is also respectable. However, the turbo doesn’t kick in until 2,500rpm and there’s a noticeable lag in the lower rev range, which in a manual can be a bit annoying when you’re off the line.

Whichever gearbox you choose, the Cruze SRi/Sri-V’s manual and automatic is a great gearbox. The close-ratio 6-speed manual is smooth and sweet, while the automatic shifts quickly and responsively. Put it in Sport mode and the throttle response becomes sharper and you’ll even have downshifts.

The amazing driving power of these two is the result of a lot of local ideas from Holden engineers. The car handles well with good cornering composure. You don’t mind the slight turbo lag because the car feels like the steering, clutch, brakes and suspension have been fine-tuned over and over again until they’re all perfect. Together, they work so seamlessly that you start to appreciate that the SRi/Sri-V is made by passionate people who really care about driving.

Basically, the Cruze SRi/Sri-V is more than a small car, it’s a very well-balanced, fun-to-drive small car. If we were trying to choose, we’d just like the chassis to be a bit more responsive and the sound sportier.

Our week with the SRi/Sri-V returned an average of 9.1L/100km in the manual and 10.3L/100km in the automatic, with an equal split of city and highway driving. Nothing to shout about, but not too bad either.

The SRi adds to the already well-equipped CD/CDX models 17-inch alloy wheels and a 6-speaker infotainment system with MyLink, 7-inch color touchscreen, smartphone app integration and Bluetooth® audio streaming. Additionally, the top SRi-V gets 18-inch wheels shod with 235-fat tyres, heated leather seats, a rear-view camera and sat-nav as standard.
