The commercial heart of Fitzroy is Brunswick Street, one of Melbourne’s most popular shopping, dining and nightlife strips. In addition to art spaces and specialty bookstores, Brunswick Street is home to old- and new-school cafes serving specialty coffee and delicious food, as well as restaurants, bars, from fine dining on Bone Ap to local gin and jeffles. A roaring fire, a glass of red, an exceptional selection of canapés and endless views of Melbourne. Another quote from Oscar Wilde, ‘Let luxuries surround me, I can do without necessities!’. We are sure that famous playwrights will be comfortable in our Club Sofitel Lounge. Don’t you think? Finding a good, safe place for kids in Melbourne’s CBD can be difficult. This is why one of our favorite CBD fringe spots is East Melbourne’s Fitzroy Gardens.
Fitzroy Gardens is one of Melbourne’s most historic and beautiful gardens. Beautiful tree-lined paths and wide lawns provide ample opportunities for jogging and are a great backdrop for children’s photos.
The English-style garden has several attractions that are good for children – a small playground, a model Tudor village, a fairy tree, the cook’s cottage and a conservatory.
Note that there are water features and waterfalls in the gardens, so be careful with small children.

The playground is small but fun as the climbing structure/slide has sleeping dragons and swings hanging from giraffe necks. The playground is not shady.
Cook’s Cottage is the oldest building in Australia and was built by Captain James Cook’s parents. The cottage was brought to Melbourne in 1934, each brick individually counted, barreled, shipped and rebuilt.
The conservatory hosts five different flower shows a year and is built in the Spanish Mission architectural style.
Ola Kohn’s fairy tree is carved from the stump of one of the original red gum trees in Fitzroy Gardens, which is over 300 years old. Nearby is a beautiful model Tudor village. Unfortunately, it’s completely fenced off, so you can’t walk through it and admire it from behind the gate.

After the fun of Fitzroy Gardens, we want to head to the Square and Compass for kid-friendly cafe stops, as I’m not a fan of the pavilion. There is also a Kerekere Cafe in the Visitor Center where you can buy tickets to enter the Cook’s Cottage. Kerekere is of particular note, as it invites customers to donate $500 to a charity choosing one of four – environmental, cultural, social or health – in $500 splits.
