How To Prevent And Eliminate Roaches From Your Indianapolis Home Or Business

The best way to keep cockroaches at bay is to eliminate the reasons why cockroaches want to enter your home. Amazon; Rachel Mendelsohn/

You probably know that feeling. This is the moment you get hungry when you hear a faint thump on the floor, look up and see a large, black cockroach flying across your room or kitchen. Not being infested with bugs is a particularly fun experience, but cockroaches somehow take things to a whole new level.

Scott Hodges, vice president of technical services at Arrow Exterminators, said cockroaches fall into two categories.

Because of these differences, Hodges likes to classify the arrival of nearby cockroaches as an infestation or invasion.

The Most Common Areas German Roaches Hide In Your Kitchen

Hodges says that being able to identify different types of roaches, as well as whether the roach is domestic or peridomestic, will help you understand how and why roaches get into your home in the first place and which methods you should try first.

Hodges says there is no single approach to ridding your home of cockroaches, but rather a combination of methods to help solve the problem. These methods help mitigate minor intrusions. If there is a bigger problem, you will need to call a bailiff.

According to Amy Cross, project coordinator at the National Pesticide Information Center, the first line of defense against cockroaches is “to outsmart them by using the biology of the pest.” In other words, eliminate all the reasons why they enter your home.

Food: Cockroaches need food to survive and will stick around if there is food available. Sweep or vacuum up crumbs on the floor, tables and counters. Never leave unsealed food in the pantry. Store open foods in the pantry in airtight containers to keep them out of the reach of pests. Cockroaches also eat substances that we don’t think of as food, such as hair, soap and toothpaste. Keep your home clean and beware of potential objects that cockroaches may try to feed on.

Leaks: Water is another resource that supports cockroach life in your home. Leaks and places where water collects or drips, such as under a sink or in a basement, are likely to attract cockroaches. To get rid of cockroaches, fix leaky pipes and replace leaky faucets. Repair broken windows or other places that may allow outside water to enter your home, such as the roof. If your basement is damp, try a dehumidifier or sump pump.

Hiding Place: During the day, cockroaches often hide in dark places. Piles of cardboard boxes, newspapers and other waste can be perfect hiding places for cockroaches. Instead of leaving your home a potential cockroach hideout, take apart and recycle the boxes.

Entry points: Close as many entry points as possible. This may include attaching a door sweep to cover a crack between the bottom of the door and the ground or plugging a hole in the foundation of the house.

Outdoor greenery: Hodges also says to keep areas free of vegetation in your landscaping by keeping gutters clean, removing leaves hanging from your home and not adding mulch when it’s not needed.

Adhesive tapes are sheets or tubes coated with a sticky substance that quickly trap cockroaches within 24 or 48 hours. Hodges says this won’t work for large-scale infestations, but it can help monitor the seriousness of the cockroach situation and show the seriousness of the problem.

IMPORTANT: If the duct tape traps a lot of cockroaches, you have a large infestation and should call a professional exterminator.

Boric acid is a poison that cockroaches cannot resist. Cockroaches must ingest boric acid to work.

What Attracts Cockroaches? Ways You’re Inviting Cockroaches Into Your Home

However, as Cross and Hodges note, there are some caveats. First, Hodges explains that it’s a slow-acting agent and actually takes time to kill cockroaches. What’s more, Hodges says people often panic and use more than necessary.

“My rule of thumb when spraying any kind of dust insecticide is if you see it, you’ve sprayed too much,” says Hodges. “When a cockroach sees a big pile of old [boric acid], it will just run around.”

To lure cockroaches with boric acid, mix equal parts sugar and water. Pour the mixture into an open jar and place it where the cockroaches can see it. Once cockroaches eat the mixture, they will eventually die.

Hodges also recommends people use caution and make sure to follow label directions when applying, as boric acid can be toxic if ingested in large amounts, according to the National Pesticide Information Center.

Diatomaceous earth acts as a scratching or abrasive agent that is spread over surfaces that insects will pass through. The diatom finger then damages or sticks to the exoskeleton and causes it to dry out.

Like boric acid, this option works slowly and people often use too much or incorrectly.

According to Hodges, using too much can sometimes cause an itchy or sore throat for homeowners, and Cross also points out that over-application can make diatomaceous earth ineffective because cockroaches will see and crawl around.

IMPORTANT: Cross advises against using bug or fog bombs. The mist does not get into the small spaces and cracks where cockroaches often hide. Additionally, some cockroach species have become resistant to certain insecticides in many cockroach sprays, such as pyrethroids.

Mix baking soda and sugar to attract cockroaches. Eating baking soda and consuming water causes the insides to swell and swell to death.

A 2013 study found that a pill made with a combination of three parts boric acid and one part baking soda was effective at killing cockroaches with an average time to death of 5 hours after ingestion.

You can make a spray by mixing at least 2.5% essential oil with water, then spray it around places where cockroaches might enter or where you’ve seen them.

If you have cockroaches in your house, such as German cockroaches, or if you think your home is breeding cockroaches, buy an insect growth regulator, such as a spray containing pyriproxyfen. These products target cockroaches in their eggs and larvae and often reduce populations by preventing them from reproducing or maturing into adults.

I Saw One Cockroach. Should I Be Worried?

Insect growth regulators are best used in conjunction with products that kill adult cockroaches. This is because it is often ineffective on fully grown cockroaches and can take several months to show any noticeable effect.

Products that attract cockroaches by applying gel via syringe can more easily cover a wider variety of hard-to-reach areas. Covering more surface area also increases the chance of roaches finding the bait.

Experts recommend applying small dots of the gel to places where cockroaches can forage or enter and exit, such as corners, under cabinets, near cracks and edges. It is better to use small dots for many areas rather than large spots for several areas.

The bait can take 1 to 3 days to kill cockroaches, potentially infecting other cockroaches.

If you see a cockroach, step on it. That’s one less cockroach to worry about in your home.

After stepping on a cockroach, disinfect the area with an antibacterial cleaner to prevent the spread of pathogens the cockroach may be carrying.

Quick tip: If you’re afraid that a cockroach infestation will kill all the eggs you’ve been carrying and make your cockroach problem worse, fear not. According to Hodges, the moment the cockroach dies, all the egg capsules die with it.
