The HP Officejet 6500A Plus is easy to recommend. Despite its low price, it offers many great features, delivers great print results and is cheap to run. The only small downside is that double-sided printing is a bit slow.
The 6500A Plus looks identical to its less capable siblings, so like that model, it’s housed in a large, bulky chassis. At 409mm tall, it’s certainly tall, and its footprint is large too (476x258mm), so it’ll take up plenty of space in a medium-sized home office. However, the glossy black finish makes it more stylish than a typical business printer.
On the slanted front panel, you’ll find a 6cm touchscreen as well as a digital touchpad for dialing a fax. The touchscreen really helps make the printer easier to use, especially when you’re setting it up for Wi-Fi or want to quickly change the number of copies.
At the top of the scanner lid is an automatic document feeder that allows you to copy or send multi-page documents by fax, and at the bottom of the printer is a 250-sheet feeder. Alongside this, you’ll find a memory card reader that accepts Memory Stick Duo, MMC, SD and XD cards, but unfortunately the printer lacks a PictBridge USB port.

Setting up and operating the 6500A Plus is easy, thanks in large part to the touchscreen that guides you step-by-step through the process with clear instructions and user-friendly animations. The printer can be connected directly to a computer via USB, or connected to a network via an Ethernet cable or wired Wi-Fi instead.
It is best to use one of the network settings as this will allow you to take advantage of the printer’s web-based features. This includes support for the HP ePrint service, which sets up the printer with its own unique email address so you can email documents and photos to it from any Internet-connected device, anywhere in the world. You can also use this email address to register your printer with the new Google Cloud Print service.
Along with that, the 6500A Plus also supports HP Web Apps, which provide quick access to online content such as Yahoo and Reuters news services or Disney and DreamWorks printouts, so you can print a daily summary or coloring pages for kids.
The automatic document feeder, located at the top of the printer, can process up to 35 sheets at a time and allows you to copy or fax multi-page documents without having to manually place each sheet on the scanner glass.

The scanner has a resolution of 4800 dpi and provides impressive results. The details in the scans remain sharp and crisp, and the color accuracy is also good. The printer is also quite fast when it comes to copying documents. It copied our black-and-white test sheet in 14 seconds, which is faster than most other inkjet multifunction models.
The 6500A Plus also handles print speed quite well. It completed our 10-page Word document in 1 minute 15 seconds, took 2 minutes 24 seconds to print our business presentation, and 2 minutes 53 seconds to complete our graphics test. Today it ranks among the most efficient multipurpose models, which is impressive considering the low price.
However, it’s not that fast when it comes to double-sided printing. It took 3 minutes 40 seconds to print five double-sided pages of our text document, about a minute longer than other inkjet models we’ve tested recently. Part of the problem is that it pauses up to 17 seconds after the first side is printed to allow the ink to dry, which of course negatively affects its overall speed.
Although intended primarily for business use, the 6500A Plus actually does a good job of printing photos, and it took us just 37 seconds to take our 4×6-inch photo. The quality matched many consumer models thanks to the bold colors and lack of serious fluctuations.

The Officejet 6500A is a huge beast, at 409mm tall with a 476x258mm footprint. However, the printer’s piano black finish looks quite luxurious, although it does show fingerprint marks.
