It’s been 5 years 7 months since I owned a Mazda 3 BM, but it wasn’t my first choice. At the end of 2014, I thought about buying a newer car, because the Hyundai Accent was almost 10 years old at that time. I know I’m quite OCD and driving a new car on a busy street in Penang is quite stressful for me, so a new car never crossed my mind.

I looked for a used Mazda 3 BL because I personally like the design of the car and I’ve looked into Mazda’s handling but couldn’t find one I like. My parents were also against getting used devices because of the maintenance costs. That’s why I did a test drive on the new Honda Civic FB and it was pretty good compared to my old car. Comfortable ride, good handling and spacious rear passenger seat, but I wouldn’t make that decision on the spot.

Then suddenly I thought of trying the new Mazda 3 BM. So I checked out one at the Mazda showroom. The simple interior and materials used are on a different level compared to their competitors. Despite the lack of space in the rear seats, I was very impressed with the steering feedback, stability and drivetrain response. Mazda also offers free maintenance for 3 years or 60,000 km and a 100,000 km warranty.
After some waiting I finally got my car in early 2015. I wanted a red Seoul but it was sold out, Bermaz made room for a CKD unit later that year. I decided on Titanium Flash Mica because I thought it would be special. The next day I traveled far from Johor to Penang because I work in Penang but I bought a car from a well known seller in my hometown Johor.
The Skyactiv-G engine with the 6-speed Skyactiv Drive automatic transmission is truly unique. The transmission of the transmission is smooth and linear. While the transmission tends to fade to the highest ratio as soon as possible for fuel economy, the Mazda 3 can’t handle downshifting either. Slightly more input on the throttle, the transmission happily downshifts to release a bit more power to make for a smooth acceleration. If you’re going in overdrive and want more power to overtake, press the gas deeper and the transmission won’t hesitate to drop two gears straight away. As a torque converter based automatic transmission, gearshifts are not as fast as in a car with a dual-clutch transmission I’ve driven before. However, it offers quite a class-leading response compared to its Japanese competitors.
Don’t want to wait for a delivery to do the job? Don’t worry, there is a gear selector behind the steering wheel which allows the driver to shift down or up on their own. Has a safety feature that prevents downshifting if downshifting causes engine and transmission speeds to exceed limits. Therefore, the owner does not have to worry about the transmission being damaged. The gear selector also has a full manual mode if the owner wants to take full control of the gearshift itself. Limiting the transmission to overdrive and pushing the car to 4000rpm for full torque on the open road is a nice thing to have.

The feel of driving a car always makes me smile. Steering feedback is direct and responsive, even though the Mazda 3 is equipped with electronic power steering. The manufacturer is equipped with Dunlop Sport Maxx TT 215/34 R18 rubber, the cornering performance of this car is outstanding because it grips the asphalt well. The handling of the Mazda 3 is somewhat stable for a family car, partly due to the original UHP tires with thin sidewalls. Suspension adjustment. That’s acceptable to me, and actually the chassis and suspension was one of the reasons I bought the Mazda. The Mazda 3 drove at the highway speed limit PLUS it was stable and allowed me to handle some minor corners with confidence. The downside is noise, vibration, and loudness (NVH), which is partly due to poor tire performance and undercarriage insulation.
Thinking a new car is easy? No, it doesn’t look like it’s going to work. However, I think I was quite lucky compared to some of the other owners I met joining the Mazda 3 Skyactiv (Malaysia) Club. First, the famous knocking sound of the front suspension when driving on rough roads or speed bumps. In a service center inspection, it was caused by premature wear of the lower control arm rubber sleeve on the front. The changes were made and the Mazda 3 is back in good health. Unfortunately the problem returns after a while and I have sent a total of three replacements but the problem is completely resolved. Fortunately, all exchanges are made according to the terms of the warranty. However, the knocking sound returned recently, after three years and previous claims. I guess it’s time to send the suspension system in for wear repairs. In addition, when driving on uneven roads, a knocking sound can also be caused by the brake caliper steering pins. I was able to solve my problem by replacing it with a custom aftermarket.
Another issue I’m having is the battery has deteriorated within 1 year and 10 months of having it. The car has a Q85 Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB) for the i-Stop system instead of the normal Valve Operated Lead Acid (VRLA). Since batteries were not well known in the market at the time, their replacement was expensive compared to ordinary batteries. I was lucky to get a completely new battery, because at that time Bermaz was still changing the 1 year or 20,000 km battery warranty policy.
In addition, around the A-pillar and rear panel behind the passenger seat, there is a slight rattling sound when driving unevenly. It didn’t happen when the car was new, but it did 3 years ago. However, I choose to live with it because I believe that as plastic ages, it can harden. Just disassembling it and getting to the root cause can do more harm than good if some of the clips unfortunately break as they are plastic parts. Also, it won’t cause major failures that could affect my driving safety.

As part of the Skyactiv umbrella, Mazda aims for fuel economy. To be honest, the fuel economy of this car is decent in real life. I travel between Bukit Mertajam – Georgetown – Bukit Mertajam on weekdays. Heavy traffic is inevitable, especially on the way back from work. However, I got an average fuel consumption of around 6.9-7.3 L/100 km, which I think is quite fuel efficient for a C-segment 2.0 sedan.
Also, I had been driving from Kota Tinggi, Johor to Bukit Mertajam, Penang before driving without refueling in between. When I arrived at Bukit Mertajam and refueled, there was about 10L of fuel left in the fuel tank, when I managed to pump around 41,047L of fuel. The total distance is 680 km in 7 hours 10 minutes, which means a fuel consumption of 6.04 l/100 km. The car was full of my luggage and personal belongings until the suspension was compressed from 4 feet to 3 feet.
When I bought a Mazda 3, it came with a free maintenance package for 3 years or 60,000 km, whichever came first. The free service includes parts and labor costs, so owners only need to make an appointment for service and drive the car there on the agreed day. This was a bonus for the owner as it helped save the cost of partial ownership for at least the first 3 years compared to the competition at the time. The only downside is that the free motor oil is semi-synthetic motor oil and owners have to add up the price difference if they want to upgrade to full synthetic.
My warranty ends with free maintenance, which is 3 years. After the warranty ended, I decided to have my car serviced at an outdoor repair shop instead of a Mazda service center. After joining the Mazda 3 Skyactiv (Malaysia) Club, I had the opportunity to visit a Mazda specialist workshop, the Endurance Power Center, located in Bukit Jalil. The owner of the workshop is also the owner of the Mazda 3 BM. He is ready to share his knowledge of preventive car maintenance with his customers and patiently explains to the owner what to do and what the expected end result is.
