Believe it or not, the second generation Mazda CX-9 is already six years old. But it still looks clean and fresh and continues to deliver driving dynamics. Still, six years is a long time in the automotive world. That’s why Mazda gave the CX-9 some styling and technical updates for 2021 to keep it relevant.

In the case of my top-of-the-line CX-9 Signature test car, 2021 will bring three exterior changes. The grille is now finished in Titanium Gray Metallic, there are larger exhaust outlets at the rear, and the whole package sits on new 20-inch Brilliant Silver wheels. None of the changes are earth-shattering – particularly the boring 10-spoke wheels – but the CX-9’s overall design remains handsome.

Slide into the interior of the Signature and you’re greeted by an attractive, simple dashboard made of really nice materials. The tops of the dash and door panels are soft to the touch, the hard plastics on the lower parts are well finished, and the Santos rosewood trim gives the entire interior a premium look. In addition, the nappa leather seats in the first and second rows get new diamond-stitched cushions and contrasting trim, while the real aluminum trim now has a patterned finish.

Those updates are joined by other premium features in the CX-9 Signature, such as three-stage heated and cooled front seats, heated second-row captain’s seats and a heated leather-trimmed steering wheel. There’s also a standard large sunroof, which will disappoint fans of huge panoramic glass roofs, as Mazda doesn’t offer one.

Front space is generous with comfortable and supportive front bins, large door panel compartments and a large center armrest. The middle row captain’s seats are on the flat side with plenty of room for adults, but the rear seats are incredibly comfortable. Headroom and legroom for anyone over six feet is basically non-existent, but at least there are cup holders and a few USB ports for any kids you bring along.

How Big Is The Mazda Cx 9?

In the luggage space category, the CX-9 lags behind the competition. With all seats folded down, there’s 14.4 cubic feet behind the third row, rising to 71.2 cubic feet when both rear rows are folded down. By comparison, behind the rear seats, the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander offer 16 cubic feet of storage, while the Kia Telluride has a hefty 21 cubic feet. With the two rear rows folded, the Honda (82.1 cubic feet), Kia (87 cubic feet) and Toyota (84.3 cubic feet) all dwarf the Mazda.

The most significant update to Mazda’s largest crossover is the addition of a 10.3-inch infotainment system screen in the center. A large screen is standard on all CX-9 models and offers sharp resolution and reasonable graphics, but this still isn’t a touchscreen, so you’ll have to fiddle with the center console controller to enter destinations into the CX-9’s standard navigation system, signature .

Even without the touchscreen capability, Mazda Connect is a pretty intuitive interface, with a 12-speaker Bose audio system, satellite radio, Bluetooth and a Wi-Fi hotspot. If you fear Mazda technology, and some of the Roadshow staff do, you can choose to outsource the infotainment controls to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The CX-9 certainly has no shortage of outlets, with a wireless charging pad on the underside of the center console, USB charging ports within easy reach of all three rows of seats, and 12-volt outlets up front and in the boot.

Mazda Cx 9 Review And Video

In terms of driver assistance technology, every CX-9 comes with adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure assist and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The My Signature tester’s safety menu is further enhanced with front and rear parking sensors, a head-up display, traffic sign recognition and a 360-degree camera system with respectable image quality.

Every CX-9 is motivated by a turbocharged 2.5-liter I4. When running on 93-octane fuel, the big-block four offers 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque, with the latter at 2,500 rpm. 87-octane regular gas is also possible, but output drops to 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. Regardless, the CX-9 feels quite lively in Sport mode when accelerating from a standstill, and continues to pull strongly through the mid-range, making it easy to pass slower traffic and merge flawlessly on motorways.

The CX-9’s engine is powered by a six-speed automatic transmission, which is archaic by today’s standards given the advent of eight-, nine-, and ten-speed transmissions. In service, however, there’s not much to complain about with the six-speed transmission, as it delivers smooth, well-timed shifts and helps return competitive EPA-estimated fuel economy figures of 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

However, the Mazda’s powertrain is on the rougher end of the noise spectrum, and a slight vibration is noticeable when you rev the engine towards the 6,300-rpm redline. The CX-9 also sacrifices some drag compared to its V6 rivals, with a 3,500-pound capacity. The four-wheel-drive Pilot, Telluride and Highlander can tow 5,000 pounds.

Mazda Cx 9 Pricing And Specs

On the road, the CX-9’s ride is taut, with the suspension brushing off small to medium bumps and the cabin remaining impressively muted from annoying road and wind noise. Throw this crossover into a corner and its body motions will always be under control, with just the slightest amount of sag under braking and corner lean before lowering and cornering. The 20-inch Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 422 Plus tires offer good grip. Add to that responsive and well-measured steering, along with firm brakes that are easy to modulate, and you’ve got a three-row crossover that offers the sportiest reflexes in its class.

The Signature version of the CX-9 shown here is expensive, with a sticker of $48,575 as tested. Mind you, it comes with standard four-wheel drive, a classy Nappa leather interior and all the driving aids you could want, but I’d be willing to give up a few things for a softer hit to the bank account.

For my build, I’d start with the four-wheel-drive Touring model that starts at $39,025, which includes $1,175 for destination. This trim comes standard with 18-inch wheels, leather interior and heated front seats, and must-have features like blind spot monitoring and LED headlights are fitted to all CX-9s. Then I’d throw in the $395 Snowflake White Pearl Mica paint and the $2,060 Touring Premium package, mostly for the Bose sound system, satellite radio, front and rear parking sensors, and wireless phone charger. All told, my ideal Mazda costs a more reasonable $41,480.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 starts at $35,335, including front-wheel-drive destination, which puts it in the same bracket as Honda, Kia and Toyota. Upgrade to four-wheel drive for an additional $1,900. While the CX-9 doesn’t offer as many features as its rivals, the Mazda has a healthy dose of style, a truly premium interior and firmer handling characteristics than the rest. If those emotional qualities are enough to see beyond the cramped third row and trunk, I wouldn’t blame you. But if those aren’t enough to make up for the shortcomings in practice, I wouldn’t blame you for looking elsewhere.
