Metal Halide High Bay – Have you ever needed a 400w metal halide LED replacement? One of our most recent customers is A customer contacted us for advice on how to use LED high bays to replace 400w metal halide high bays in a 100′ x 200′ freight warehouse. The client’s current lighting was outdated and many of the fixtures were not working. The customer contacted us to purchase a new light that would be more efficient than their previous fixture. Access Fixtures was able to step up, provide photometric data and provide the customer with new LED fixtures at a lower cost and higher efficiency than ever before. Read on to find out how we did!
One of the biggest problems was constant ballast failure. Every time a ballast failure occurs, the customer must call an electrician to fix it. With 25′ ceilings in the warehouse, this quickly became time consuming and expensive.

Another major problem was the lack of efficiency and cost of operating the fixtures. These lights used a lot of electricity at 460 system watts per fixture. What also increased efficiency was the shorter time frame in which the metal halides would degrade or become less luminous.

The last major issue the customer was concerned about was the risk of non-passive failure. Non-passive failure is a spontaneous explosion that can occur in metal halide lamps. It was raining hot glass on everything around and the risk of this happening was too great for the customer to take.
One of the client’s main concerns was the lack of efficiency of their current lighting. 400w metal halide lamps emit about 36,000 initial lumens and 24,000 mean (average) lumens. As previously mentioned, our customer’s current 400 watt metal halide system uses about 460 system watts per fixture, which draws a lot of power!
Access Fixtures lighting experts determined that the HIIO 240 was the lowest cost and highest performing fixture to fit this customer’s application.
It has an IP65 rating which means it is suitable for warehouses. An IP65 rating means that the luminaire is protected against multi-directional, low-pressure water jets. In other words, customers have the option to rinse them off or remove dust with an air compressor if necessary.

HIIO, being an LED, does not suffer from the risk of passive failure. No shards of raining glass to worry about!
HIIO is also brighter and has better color reproduction than traditional metal halide fixtures. HIIO 240 has a beam spread of 120 degrees which distributes the light in a more balanced pattern.
Unlike traditional metal halide fixtures, the HIIO 240 can handle infinite on and off cycles. Metal halides take time to warm up before reaching full brightness and their ballasts are damaged by turning them on and off too often. LED drivers are digital rather than combustion based, so they can be switched on and off without any damage.
To run this photometry we used 16 HIIO 240 in 2 rows of 8 in the ceiling. You can download the full photometric analysis at the link on the right. The overall result was a happier customer with more efficient lighting that will save money in the long run.
High Bay Vs Low Bay Light Fixtures: What’s The Difference?
Are you interested in replacing old metal halide high-bays with new LED models? Looking for a 400w metal halide LED replacement? Not sure how much to buy and which fixture is a suitable one-to-one replacement? We recommend that you order a photometric analysis. Photometric analysis is a computerized simulation of the area that needs to be lit, run with the fixtures that Access Fixtures manufactures and sells. This simulation is then delivered as a report that can help you choose lighting for your next project. For general questions, call 800-468-9925 or email [email protected]

Led High Bay Light
Round LED high bays are designed to reduce maintenance costs by replacing traditional metal halide fixtures. Constructed with a powder coated aluminum body and polycarbonate lens for high durability. A waterproof IP65 rating means that the luminaire can withstand outdoor weather conditions. Install the fixture with the included stainless steel eye hooks or use the matching adjustable U-bracket (sold separately). Use a compatible microwave motion sensor (sold separately) to maximize energy savings.
A product with an ETL-certified label has been evaluated by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) and meets national product safety standards. An ETL certification is accepted in the US and Canada.
This product meets higher lumen and efficiency standards than required for normal DLC® classification. This rating requires the driver to submit an IN-SITU Temperature Measurement Test (ISTMT) with information on onboard controls.
Super Bright LEDs, Inc. Offers a 5-year warranty against manufacturer’s defects and malfunctions. If you experience a failure of an LED or other component that is not caused by negligence, abuse, unauthorized repair or disassembly, we will replace the product within the warranty period. If the correct product is no longer available, a product of equal value can be substituted or a gift card for the value of the product. Read more

TRIAC Dimming: Triode for alternating current dimming (TRIAC) is used to control size dimmable power supplies such as high voltage dimmable power supplies. These dimmable power supplies work by varying the current on the AC input side of the power supply through a TRIAC dimmer. This change in power on the AC input side changes the voltage on the DC output side and controls the intensity of the LEDs. TRIAC dimmers are common hardware store and household dimmers, including brands such as Lutron and Leviton.
Pulse-Width Modulation Dimming: Pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming can be used to control dimmable power supplies such as the Mean Well HLG series and the Mean Well LPF series. This type of dimming control adjusts the output current based on the duty cycle. As the duty cycle increases, the current will increase and the LEDs will light up. Conversely, if the duty cycle decreases, the current will decrease and the LEDs will dim. Pulse width modulation for these drivers is based on a 10V signal level with frequencies between 100Hz ~ 3KHz. MCBRF-4A or MLD-5A are suitable for this application.
Resistive dimming: Resistive dimming can be used to control dimmable power supplies such as the Min Well HLG series. The resistance can be constant or variable. If a certain level of dimming is required, a simple resistor is needed to dim the LED to a specific level. If another dimmable level is desired, a potentiometer can serve this purpose. By changing the resistance value of the potentiometer, the output current from the power supply changes and the LED intensity changes. Control of a single power supply requires a 100K ohm potentiometer from 100% intensity (100K ohms) to about 10% intensity (10K ohms) depending on where the wiper is located.
1-10V dimming: 1-10V dimming can be used to control step-down power supplies such as 12V Mean Well HLG-40 ~ 240 Series or 24V Mean Well HLG-40 ~ 240 Series. This type of dimming control is obsolete for compatible dimmable power supplies and has been replaced by 0-10V dimmer control. A 1-10V dimming control works by varying the voltage from 1-10 VDC. A 10 volt signal on the dimming cable allows maximum current to flow to the LEDs for maximum intensity. A 1-volt signal on the fog wire allows 10% of the current to flow from the power supply, giving about 10% of the maximum intensity of the LEDs.

0-10V dimming: 0-10V dimming can be used to control step-down power supplies such as the 12V Mean Well HLG-600 series or the 24V Mean Well HLG-600 series. This type of dimming control is the most popular and newest style of matching dimmable power supplies. A 0-10V dimming control works by varying the voltage from 0-10 VDC. A 10 volt signal on the dimming cable allows maximum current to flow to the LEDs for maximum intensity. A 0.6-volt signal on the dimming leads allows 6% of the current to flow through the power supply – dimming the LEDs to about 6% of full intensity. You can find 0-10V dimmers here.
