Co-owners of Mitchell Harris – Craig Mitchell, Alicia Linley, John Harris and Shanin Harris – believed in their hometown of Ballarat. They believed that in their western Victorian town, there was a significant audience ready for an urban winery. They originally hoped to create a place where they could sell most of what they made direct to the customer and wanted it to become a hub for local wine producers in western and central Victoria and beyond.

In The Kitchen: Mitchell Harris Wines
After 8 years at Domaine Chandon, working with winemaking teams around the world, John wanted to create his own brand. Mitchell Harris was born after returning home to Ballarat and joining forces with her fellow wine-loving women, the Mitchells.
Apart from a few days at the beginning of the crisis, we have been able to keep our doors open, although we trade with a very different business model. During our two days off, we converted our bar into a Mitchell Harris Take Away wine and food store and our kitchen team created the new Take Away & Heat at Home menu. One of our bar managers is making the bread, and we’ve been able to keep all of our full-time and part-time staff on board, delivering, taking orders, cleaning, maintenance, and even making donuts!
Fortunately, when the first blocking rules were announced, we had just finished harvesting and hand-picked the last few blocks with a basic safety spacing exercise. The yield this year was significantly lower, but the quality is very high.

Unfortunately, lockdown rules prevented the curious winemaker’s show team from getting together to help out with the Shiraz Pyrenees collection. However, my guys Craig (Mitchell) and I got our hands dirty and switched off as we streamed the process live via Instagram and WhatsApp.
There will no doubt be acute short-term pain for some, but Ballarat’s long-term growth prospects are still very good. We’ve seen our sense of community strengthen during the pandemic with more connections between local businesses and the community.
Perhaps people will evaluate their desire to live in crowded urban environments and find that they can work from home or remotely. Ballarat will continue to shine with world-class medical and educational facilities, a growing industrial sector and a thriving hospitality scene.
I guess for the first few weeks, amidst all the unknowns and fears, there was a somewhat perverse sense of joy in starting a new business. Suddenly we went into startup mode and started selling like crazy to convert our winery and wine bar business to a takeout delivery model.

We have been overwhelmed by the amount of support we have received from our loyal customers, our fellow hoteliers and the community at large. Being able to provide the same service and quality as Mitchell Harris in people’s homes and still put a smile on their faces has been invaluable.
Unfortunately, I didn’t necessarily have any extra free time. Between business survival and homeschooling, I read a lot of spreadsheets and financial reports, but I also read some brilliant books by Tim Winton, The Shepherd’s Hut and The Boy Behind the Curtain. In the evenings at home I’ve been raiding the barn and watching the new Ozark series Life After Death and re-watching The Fall on Netflix and we’ve been hooked on The Capture on ABC iView.
