Think of Peru and the first thing that comes to mind is the glorious ancient site of Machu Picchu. We did the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu with Mountain Lodges in Peru. This has to be one of the most unforgettable Peruvian visits! It’s definitely worth considering if you’re looking to hike in Peru.
Peru is a hiking dream destination and this amazing country has many amazing trails besides the famous Inca Trail. I did not enjoy hiking Peru’s ancient road, the Inca Trail, to Machu Picchu. Camping, sharing a toilet and bag is not my style. There are also many restrictions on the Inca Trail: the Peruvian government allows 500 people a day, including porters.
Day Luxury Lodge To Lodge Salkantay Trek To Machu Picchu
A colleague in my husband’s Sao Paulo office recommended the Salkantay Trek offered by the Mountain Lodges of Peru (MLP).
The famous Salkantay Trek (or Salcantay Trek) has been listed among the 25 best Treks in the world by National Geographic Adventure Travel magazine.
The Salkantay Trail takes hikers through fifteen biozones, through spectacular mountain passes and up to elevations of up to 15,000 feet, en route to the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu. There are other good tours in Peru for beginners.
We did this journey before starting a family with our daughter, Kaavya. If you want to visit Machu Picchu with your kids, check out this post.
Day Salkantay Trek To Machu Picchu
In addition to avoiding the crowds on the Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek offers a lodge-to-lodge trek option with MLP. This is ideal for travelers looking for luxury hiking opportunities without sacrificing a good night’s sleep or other luxury travel amenities.
I checked out their boutique hostels in the desert: air-conditioned rooms with soft beds, hot showers, gourmet food and internet. Luxury in a perfect environment. I was sold!
Built according to eco-friendly practices, the lodges of the Peruvian Highlands ensure that guests experience the wonders of the Peruvian landscape without negatively impacting their environment.
This is a moderately difficult journey. You only carry a small bag with you: water, some food, and personal care items. All baggage is transferred between destinations on board. Before reaching the site, picnic lunches and gourmet dinners are arranged at the lodges.
The Complete Guide To Hiking Peru’s Salkantay Trek [2022]
But you still have to walk for 4-6 hours on your own! Exceed the altitude of 15,000 meters. So even with all its luxuries and amenities, travel definitely requires more than a modest level.
A short flight of 1 hour and 20 minutes from Lima brought us to Cusco, the starting point of the Salkantay Trek. Cusco has many activities to do, including a trip to Moray and the Maras.
Going from sea level to an altitude of 11,000 meters in an hour is not something your body is used to. So make sure you get to Cusco a day or two early and enjoy yourself. My husband had a bad headache the first day in Cusco, coca tea and chewing coca leaves helped a lot.
Cusco or Cuzco, the oldest surviving city in South America, is the gateway to Machu Picchu. This city is full of history and heritage enough to offer a day or two to explore. But we had a tight schedule during our 3 week stay in South America. We spent the day relaxing at our hotel and wandering around its cobbled streets and main square, Plaça d’Armes.
Mountain Lodges Of Peru (mlp)
We met other guests on the walk and had a briefing with the MLP staff that evening.
Here’s a recap of my most exciting hike ever. I’ve added enough pictures to whet your appetite!
We have an early start today with the MLP guide waiting for us in the hotel lobby. First we went to the Inca ruins of Tarawasi (about 1.5 hours from Cusco) and then to the mountain village of Mollepata.
Then we climbed a hilly road with rocks and leaves to reach the starting point of the walk. I could not be more excited! But this was the first day and with a 6 hour walk ahead of us we were advised to stay and not stay
