Scuba Diving At Phi Phi Islands Vs Racha Islands Phuket

It is an excellent anchorage in most if not all conditions and is protected by large limestone cliffs. Onshore facilities include numerous restaurants to suit all tastes, modest nightclubs, and the obligatory clothing and souvenir shops. There are plenty of activities on land to keep one busy.

Southwest of our base in Phuket, you’ll find open water dotted with islands like Koh Racha, Koh Dokmai and Koh Maiton. In the SW monsoon (May – October) sailing can be quite pleasant here. In the US monsoon (November – April) there is usually a constant moderate breeze.

In 2022, Phi Phi Island opens, and the beaches and other nearby islands are more beautiful than ever. The island seems quiet and many shops, restaurants and hotels are still closed, but things are starting to look up. There are only a few visitors a day, mostly locals and expats, but you can still eat well, shop a little, and easily take long-tail boats to nearby islands and other beaches. In short, the island is so beautiful and nature is recovering well, but it’s also sad to see so many closed shops and empty dark streets after 9pm. Phi Phi Island (Koh Phi Phi) is a very popular island located 40 km south of Phuket. In case you were wondering, you say Phi Phi ‘Pee-Pee’, not ‘Fee-Fee’! However, they need no introduction as Leonardo DiCaprio did it in 2000 with the movie ‘The Beach’. Since then, the island has continued to develop.

As we all remember, a tsunami devastated the island in 2004 and ever since, despite promises to keep the island small and manageable, Phi Phi has gotten busier but not always better. However, Phi Phi remains the most popular island among the many islands around Phuket.

However, the young people who travel to Phi Phi Island throughout the year seem to like it so much that we decided to visit again. the result? Yes, it’s crowded, especially at night, but the islands are amazing, and it’s a great place to party!

In case you didn’t know, Phi Phi is made up of several islands, but you can only stay on one of them. You’ll notice that many island names begin with ‘Koh’, which means ‘island’ in Thai. So sometimes you will hear ‘Koh Phi Phi’ or ‘Phi Phi Island’, but for obvious reasons you will rarely hear ‘Koh Phi Phi Island’.

Phi Phi Don is where everything is: the main town, all the hotels and parties! The landing pier is located at Teluk Tonsai, and the opposite side is Loh Dalum beach. Phi Phi Don has several beaches, and most of the hotels are located around the narrow part of the island. However, the hotels are also located on secluded beaches, but it takes a short long-tail boat ride to reach them. So if you plan to enjoy the party, you need to make sure you pick the right beach! Of course, the hotel offers a free boat shuttle, but if you’re too much of a party animal, the boat ride might not be fun.

Phi Phi Island Day Trip

Phi Phi Don looks like a crazy maze between 2 bays: Tonsai Bay, where the ferry drops you, and Loh Dalum Bay, where the main beach is.

To imagine what it would be like to walk through the maze, imagine the following: T-shirt shops, tattoo parlors, bars, dive centers, tattoo parlors, fast food, bars, travel agencies, massage parlors; repeat over and over. I have never seen so many tattoo shops per square meter! I have never seen so many cats either!

Most shops don’t open in the morning but stay open until late at night. This is probably because most of the island’s population went to explore the surrounding islands. Other visitors enjoy the soft sand and beautiful scenery (water permitting). The rest of the tourists are probably still in bed trying to get over a massive hangover from one of these cheap ‘buckets’ that looked so cool the day before (read about that later on the page)

In the afternoon, people start showing up to roam the streets: shopping, drinking too early, or getting a massage. There are many small restaurants for all tastes and budgets, but most of them seem quite touristy. We tried a nice beach side restaurant called ‘Tonsai Seafood’ which was pretty good and ‘The Point Restaurant’ which was below average.
