The PTA Department began using the APTA-sponsored Centralized Application System (CAS) for its admissions process on March 1, 2021. Applicants can apply from December 1 to May 15 each year. Submit all materials by May 15th. Please request that your transcripts be sent to PTA CAS and State Admissions as soon as spring classes are released. The licensing exam for the Physical Therapy Assistant program is a national exam. Once obtained in NY, a certificate will be issued and no further tests are required. In order to obtain a certificate or license for one of the following states, individuals must apply to have a transcript sent to each state board and transfer their passing score to the FSBPT board. The College’s Physical Therapy Assistant program prepares students to enter the healthcare workforce as a physical therapy assistant with an Associate in Applied Science degree. The program strives to provide our students with a quality education that supports professional healthcare practice while maintaining established clinical practice guidelines as outlined by the APTA, and that emphasizes graduate professional education. The Physical Therapist Assistant program will offer students an affordable, quality education and provide competent, professional and employable local and regional health care providers. PTAs are trained under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist to approach various health conditions in a manner that follows established practice guidelines outlined by the APTA. Clinical education is a key component of the physical therapy assistant program in college. During the two-year program, students complete two supervised five-week full-time clinical placements and one six-week full-time supervised clinical placement. The student has at least two additional clinical experiences including a pediatric setting, private ambulatory facility, skilled nursing facility, or area of interest.

Clinical assignments typically involve a 40-hour work week during the experience. Final affiliation is scheduled only after successful completion of all other courses. Due to the limited availability of local clinical sites, students enrolled in the physical therapist program must be prepared to travel to participating facilities regardless of location. Local location cannot be guaranteed. Students will be required to meet their own living and travel needs during all field assignments.

Workplaces require compliance with New York State Department of Health and applicable OSHA regulations. This means that a physical examination with proof of immunization is required for each student prior to admission to the program, and the physical examination must be updated annually and must be current for the duration of each clinical trial. Each student is responsible for obtaining individual health insurance prior to each clinical field. Personal liability and malpractice insurance of $1 million in per-occurrence coverage is negotiated by the Academy for each clinical branch and paid for by the student for a specific program fee. Each student must present proof of current CPR and First Aid certification prior to each clinical affiliation.

Graduates of the program must pass the National Physical Therapy Assistant Licensure Examination administered by the Federation of Physical Therapy Boards (FSBPT).
