A normal work week for refrigeration and air conditioning equipment is 40 hours (8 hours per day, 5 days per week). As an apprentice, you earn while you learn and are paid by the hour while you work at the workplace. Salary starts at 40% of the apprentice’s hourly rate and increases throughout the apprenticeship.
Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning/refrigeration
Requirements for refrigeration/air conditioning apprenticeship programs vary across Canada. In most states and territories, you must be at least 16 years old and have a 12th grade education or equivalent to enter the program. You may find it useful to have math lessons.
Some states and territories offer high school apprenticeship programs that allow high school students to work toward a career in Refrigeration/Air Conditioning.
Certification is available in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, and in all other provinces and territories, but is voluntary. Even in areas where certification is free, it is always recommended to tell employers and other employers that you are a professional, and that will also help you find work.
To become certified as an Instructor/Airman, you usually need to complete a three to four year apprenticeship program. Once you have successfully completed the on-the-job training, technical training and required exams, you will receive an immigration certificate. .

This program, offered at the Cowichan Trade Center, prepares individuals to enter the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning industry services sector. The program provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of installation, servicing, and troubleshooting all aspects of commercial and residential heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) as well as commercial. Classroom instruction is combined with hands-on projects and computer-based instruction. Upon successful completion, students will receive a Vancouver Island University, CFC accredited certificate from Environment Canada and the Province of British Columbia. Agility, good hand/eye coordination and problem solving skills with attention to detail are desirable traits for those pursuing careers in Boxing and Air.
