This was the last part of our Spanish trip. Up to this point we had traveled between cities by plane, bus and train, and now we were trying to figure out the best way to get from San Sebastián to Santiago de Compostela.

San Sebastián Car Rental

I don’t remember the source, but I saw something in a blog post or forum that made my eyes light up. It goes something like this:

The idea hadn’t crossed my mind until then, but after reading this, I knew there was only one way for any food-obsessed traveler to take this trip. We had to drive.

Due to the current global situation, travel guidelines have changed frequently. Our friends at SafetyWing have created a website detailing travel restrictions around the world.

Car Rental San Sebastian

Driving from San Sebastián to Santiago de Compostela is better than taking a bus or train for one obvious reason – freedom. By car, you will have the freedom to go at your own pace and stop wherever and whenever you want. For us, it wasn’t just about getting from point A to point B. We wanted to see (and taste) as much of this beautiful part of the country as possible, so renting a car and driving was the most attractive option for us.

You probably think that renting a car is more expensive than taking a bus or train. It is, but not as much as you think. I will go into more detail about it below, but renting a caravan for three days with another city as a departure point cost us a total of 324.55 euros. This already included full insurance. Between the five people in our group, this was less than €22 per person per day. Not bad!

In comparison, the cheapest train ticket I could find on Loco2 was €45.50 for a journey of 10 hours and 30 minutes. Alsa buses cost more than €61.24 for a 12 hour 30 minute bus ride. I just checked the price of flights and the cheapest I could find is 48 euros, but first you have to go to Barcelona and spend 7 hours in transit before continuing to Santiago de Compostela. Not exactly the most ideal scenario.

If you are traveling alone, then traveling by train or bus will certainly be more convenient. But if you are traveling in a group, then renting a car is a good option to consider.

Spain Road Trip: San Sebastian To Santiago De Compostela

We rented a car in San Sebastian through easyterra.com, a car rental aggregator similar to those flight booking websites. We haven’t had cars often so the process makes me a little nervous, but I went with EasyTerra because their prices were competitive and they had a good 8.2 rating on TrustPilot. I booked a car in advance through their website, which was then fulfilled by Europcar. We had no problems at all.

The car rental procedure went smoothly. We were already booked a month or two before our trip, so we filled out some paperwork and left in less than half an hour.

Since we were picking up the car in one city and dropping it off in another, we had to pay the standard one-way toll. You also have to pay more for each additional driver you want to register.

And there you have it, our iron stage for the next three days. It is an Opel station wagon that can fit up to seven people without luggage. There were five people in our group and we had no problem fitting all our luggage in the back.

Before driving, be sure to thoroughly check the car for damage and whether it matches the damage specified in your rental agreement. I took lots of pictures and videos to make sure we won’t have any problems when we get the car back.

After picking up the car, we went straight to Logrono which is less than two hours south of San Sebastian. It is known to have the best pinthos in the region. If you’re interested in doing just that, check out our guide to Logrono pintxos for more pictures and information.

We parked the car in a garage in San Sebastián that night (€16.50 overnight) and then set off early the next morning on our two-day journey.

Our first stop was Bilbao, the capital of the Basque Country. It is located 102 km (63.4 miles) west of San Sebastián and takes about an hour and 15 minutes to reach.

Awesome Things To Do In San Sebastián Spain

Northern Spain is very beautiful. We drove on fast highways with lush greenery and mountains on both sides. We would occasionally catch a glimpse of the coast, but not as many as I expected. I guess it depends on which highway you’re on. We just followed whatever route Google Maps gave us.

We had a lot of ground to cover, so we only had a few hours to spend in Bilbao, enough time for lunch and a quick walk around town. As described, it is the capital of the Basque Country and its largest city.

I usually stick to local food when we travel, but we’ve been in Spain for over two weeks now so we were craving something different. This Mexican restaurant had great reviews so we decided to eat here. Totopo is a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence recipient with a near perfect 4.5 star rating.

I’ve been craving a good burrito for days and this satisfied me well. They have Mexican burritos of chicken, pork, beef and tofu for 6.50 euros each.

One of the attractions Bilbao is most famous for is the Guggenheim. It is an impressive contemporary art museum designed by the iconic architect Frank Gehry. I really wanted to go inside this museum, but we didn’t have time, so we took some photos from the outside.

Isn’t it stunning? The building itself is a sculpture. I’ve only heard great things about the Guggenheim in Bilbao, so you should definitely make a stop here if you have time. Entrance is 17 euros.

I don’t know much about architecture, but I’ve read that the design of the Guggenheim was universally well received by critics and the public, which is rare. The World Architecture Survey called it one of the most important works created since 1980.

Renting A Car In Spain

In front of the Guggenheim is this 13-meter (43-foot) topiary sculpture of a dog named Puppy by American pop artist Jeff Koons. It is covered with scaffolding, but the sculpture is covered with various plants and flowers. They change the flowers every few months, which they do here.

There was a sign explaining what these men were doing and they seemed to change the types of flowers used according to the season. In one picture, the puppy was covered in red, orange and yellow flowers, while in another it looked more lilac blue and white.

The next part of our journey took us from Bilbao to a small town in Cantabria called Comillas. We stopped here to see an unusual house I had just come across
