San Francisco To London – A British Airways A380 can make a hellish flight from San Francisco to London in just 9 hours… But strong winds and a busy Heathrow airport forced the pilot to fly several loops in the chaos. This and the sudden arrival caused three people to turn around – just in our seating row.
The connecting flight to Zurich arrived a few minutes late, no problem. With a big welcome from family and friends (THANK YOU !!!) we reached the end of our wonderful trip around the world. 🙂

This was our second visit to San Francisco after 2011. Since we had done a lot of sightseeing in that time, we weren’t under too much pressure to complete the bucket lists. Take Alcatraz, for example. This means more time for other things, for example. on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Tip: Don’t stay at busy Vista Point (where the hop-on, hop-off buses stop), but walk 15 minutes up Battery Spencer for the best view.

Getting a visa to come here was straight forward for me (or at least what I thought it would be). I came here through SVIP, which I mentioned in a previous post and they set up my US work visa very well and handled most of the process. All I really needed to do was fill out some paperwork where necessary, do a few online forms and then have an appointment with the US embassy in London. During the appointment, I spent more time waiting than the “interview”. I did the interview based on the letters because they only asked a few questions like why I went to the United States and what I did. Nothing too deep.

Also, SVIP really came out with this like Deliveroo and helped make life easier here (not very helpful for you I know). We were arranged for accommodation for the first month and I was lucky enough to stay in the house where I lived. “SVIP House” is a house in Bernal Heights that the program rents to 6 soldiers each year. I’ve never been house hunting. As you know housing costs in the Bay Area are the most expensive in America. These prices may be different when you read this but as of March 2019, the average rent for a one bedroom apartment is over $3.6k/month. Obviously you can get roommates and split the rent (especially since I was looking at HubHaus as a living option before I knew about SVIP housing), live outside of San Francisco in Oakland or San Jose (still $2.6k ) or just live in a place where it is not fun to save money. I will come here hoping to pay more rent than you do now. Before I came I expected to pay $1.5k/month but I actually paid less than that.
