We booked our tickets months in advance which saved us a lot of money. It was a little difficult to guess the date of our trip since we live on the road and travel full time (and who wants to be locked into a date?), but advance reservations are a must if you want to. The journey takes 12 hours and during peak periods you can leave Melbourne at 7am or 7pm. Sailing through Bass Strait can get pretty crazy if you go in bad weather or big storms which we’re sure is no fun, so we booked in for a night sail. With our two little blondes, we liked the idea of putting them to bed while we were sailing so they could sleep through rough seas and hopefully avoid any possible seasickness. Traveling at night also meant we were ready to start exploring Tasmania in the daylight hours. (as opposed to disembarking at night and needing to find a place to camp overnight).
On our trip, we had a smooth sailing with just a little rocking of the boat. Once on board, we enjoyed a well-deserved drink while the children played in the play area (located on deck 10), which did a great job of tiring them out! Then we had dinner ($25 buffet / children under 5 eat free) and decided to keep the kids late to watch a movie in the theater to make sure they were really well before going to our cabin for them sleep It was a good night.
There are 2 options for your soul journey. You can reserve your own private cabin/cabin or stay in a seat in a private lounge on deck. If you are traveling with a baby like us (under 3 years old), you cannot book a seat, you have to book a cabin. There are a wide range of cabins available to suit your budget and travel needs. They range from a whiz-bang luxury cabin complete with double bed, twin windows and TV, to a simple room with 4 bunk beds and shower/bathroom. As we were traveling at night, we decided a simple private cabin would do just fine. These cabins are also located in the center of the boat which means you will feel less swayed in the boat as well.
