St Ives Cornwall Train Station – As I said before, the weather was not very clear. The rain passed as the cold and cloudy weather left Lelant Saltings. However, as we drove along the branch line, I noticed some of the famous beaches of St Ives, unspoilt by the gray skies. We soon arrived at the St Ives bus stop.
Also, if you buy a ticket there it will say ST IVES CORNWALL, not to be confused with St Ives in Cambridgeshire … which closed in the 1970s. Hmm.
St Ives Cornwall Train Station
St Ives, like most branches these days, is a basic but adequate station. There is a single platform, a shelter, and a basic vending machine that only sells tickets for the station in the branch. Surprisingly, it looked like a modified payment machine and car showroom. Again, this is not the first stop. There used to be a larger building near the town center but, like Looe, the line was cut short and the original parking lot is now – you guessed it – a car park.

St Ives railway station is a railway station serving the coastal town of St Ives, Cornwall, England. It was opened in 1877 as the last station of the last new railway to be built in the country. Converted to standard gauge in 1892, now served by Great Western Railway Services on the St Ives Bay to St Erth Line. 325 miles (523 km) from London Paddington via Bristol Temple Meads.
The station was opened by the Great Western Railway on 1 June 1877 as the terminus of a 4.25 mile (6.8 km), 7 ft (2,134 mm) branch line from St Erth until then known as St Ives. The road established itself as a railway for the city.
The platform was on a sharp bend and something was leaking behind it. The town’s platform was used to load rail lorries with fish caught by many local boats, many of which landed on Porthminster beach, under the station. Immediately outside the station was the 106-metre (97 m) high St Ives Viaduct. There was a small ging stone on the far side of the canal.

The Great Western Railway bought Tregna Castle, on the hill above the station, and opened it as a hotel to coincide with the opening of the railway.
After the last train ran on Friday 20 May 1892, the line switched to broad gauge; service from Monday as standard gauge 4 ft 8+ 1⁄2 in (1, 435 mm). On November 12, 1894, heavy rains caused the water to rush to the hills of Tregna. It breached a wall, the flood flowed to the station below, and then to the beach on the other side.
Most of the 19th century fish traffic disappeared in the first half of the 20th century.
And on September 9, 1963, all traffic was removed from the station. The signal box was no longer staffed, and in 1966 all sides were fired. In 1958 and 1959, the Rojava Region had buses stationed here; From 1960 to 1964 there were two coaches.
St Ives Railway Station
The line was proposed for closure after the Beeching Report and was therefore featured in the song “Slow Train” by Flanders and Swann.
However, the line was removed, but the original station was closed on 23 May 1971 and a new right platform opened to replace it.
It was originally a station, but the railway also takes people from St Erth’s Park and Ride.
The station is on the hill above Porthminster beach on the south side of the town. It has a single platform, on the left of trains from St Erth, which is 4.25 miles (6.8 km) south. There is a large car park next to the platform, and the town center is a short walk up the hill from the car park tunnel. The small town bus stop is across the street from the car park. The travel agency has a train ticket booking office right next to the station platform. Tickets issued to/from the station refer to it as “St Ives Cornwall”.

A path leads from the car park to Porthminster beach, where the South West Coast Path can be followed back to Carbis Bay or through the town to Lands d.
All trains are operated by Great Western Railway. All services run to and from St Erth, and connect with trains on the Cornish Main Line. There are two services per hour throughout the day. This popular hotel is located above Porthmeor beach and is housed in an attractive modern building.
The gallery showcases the best British artists of the 20th century, including famous St Ives names such as Barbara Hepworth.
The Barbara Hepworth Museum (appointments must be made) is attached to the Tate and a combined ticket allows you to visit both. Visitors arriving by train get £1 off the price of their ticket.
If the weather is good for inland why not just walk along Porthminster’s seafront to the harbour. It’s only a few minutes walk through the historic narrow streets.

St Ives was one of the earliest ports in Cornwall and although tourism is now the town’s industry, the harbor is still in the center of town and has a small fishing fleet.
There are plenty of places to spend extra cash and maybe ice cream if you still have room.
If you decide to eat one outside, watch out for the marmorants as they will try to steal the food.
Moomaid of Zennor serves excellent ice cream and has a proven beach area to enjoy.

If you’re up for something more robust, do as the locals do and head to the Sloop Inn, on the dock front.
The Sloop is known as one of the oldest pubs in England and is believed to date back to 1312. It’s full of character and there’s nothing better than sitting here with a glass of something cold and looking out at the end busy day. the world is passing by.
Trains run in the evening on the St Ives Bay line, but allow plenty of time to get back to the station before getting back on the train to St Erth.

From St Ives station it is a 10 minute walk into town. Or take a few minutes to Porthminster beach – it’s just across the car park.
Go online as much as you want for a day. Valid after morning peak, and anytime on weekends or bank holidays. Perhaps Cornwall’s most scenic railway, the St Ives Branch line takes you into the heart of one of Cornwalls favorite tourist destinations without having to worry about finding a car!
If you are using the main line, change at St Erth’s Station, or you can start your journey at Lelant Saltings where there is a dedicated Park and Ride to make your journey easier. Parking is £2.80 and you also need to buy a train ticket. You can bring your own brush
