Tafe Painting Course Sydney – MURAL: Aboriginal artists have completed a mural painting short course for the TAFE Wollongong campus.

Graduates of the new Aboriginal Cultural Arts course at TAFE Wollongong are learning the skills needed to meet the demand for First Nations arts.

After Ricky Powell graduated and completed the Storytelling Through Art short course, he gained new confidence and an expanded skill set that he hopes will propel him on a fulfilling career path.

Mr Powell was one of 20 students who recently graduated from the course. As part of the program, the class painted two large murals at the TAFE NSW Wollongong campus.

With his new skills and techniques, Powell is considering enrolling in a Certificate III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts, which could add some creative career skills to help him achieve his creative career goals.

Research conducted in 2019 by the Australia Council for the Arts found a growing interest in First Nations art.

An ABS study in 2016 found nearly 3000 people employed across cultural and creative occupations in the federal constituency of Cunningham.

“I’ve always had a passion for art, so this course was a great way to pick up new skills and sharpen the ones I already have,” Powell said.

Aunty Sharralyn (Shas) Robinson, a graduate and local Aboriginal Elder, says many locals are working in the arts and culture scene.

“I tried to paint my family’s journey and hopefully after this TAFE NSW course I will have enough skills to complete my work,” she said.

NSW TAFE teacher Glenn Duffield, a professional painter himself, was amazed at how quickly students picked up new skills and improved the skills they already had.

“For a few years now, the demand for Aboriginal Art is growing, and for some people it’s a full-time career, while for others learning to paint is a way of future-proofing their professional skills. It gives them another skill they can fall back on if needed.

“Demand is definitely increasing in Coffs Harbour, people are realizing the benefits of community engagement through the arts and we’re grateful for the growth in our region,” Ms Shorter said.

Students will now study the Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts at TAFE NSW this term using web conferencing technology and self-initiated practical work. This type of connected learning supports social distancing while allowing students to improve their learning.
