Terlingua Ghost Town Land For Sale

Terlingua Ghost Town Land For Sale – Big Bend National Park is far from any major cities and still a good distance from major towns. But since national parks are set up for nature diving, this is what you want. So, when it comes to places to stay, you have a limited choice to choose from.

Big Bend National Park has hotel, RV camping, and traditional camping, but they tend to book up quickly. I had hoped to get a hotel room in one of the on-site accommodations, but they were booked four months before I even considered my trip. So if you have your heart set on staying in the park or any famous US National Park, plan ahead and book early!

But that’s not to say I wasn’t lucky. Instead, he led me to the charming little town of Terlingua, a ghost town 30 minutes outside of Big Bend.

Texas’ Big Bend Town Of Terlingua Still Draws Attention

The term “ghost town” refers to a town/village/settlement that has been abandoned, but the building structures still exist. In the case of Terlingua, it was a mining town, especially for mercury. As the demand for mercury decreased, so did the population of Terlingua.

Today, the town limits of Terlingua still have some of the original buildings, such as the schoolhouse, a reconstructed movie theater, and the old cemetery.

Outside the official limits of the ghost town, a small art community has taken root – mainly metalwork and artist galleries. Don’t expect to see any chain restaurants here. Cafes and mini markets are locally owned and operated. No neon lights or weaving inflatables – you’re more likely to see hand-painted business signs, natural landscaping and modest structures to add to the authentic charm of this southwestern town.

On the last night of my stay in Terlingua, the monsoon rain eased. It was amazing to see the dry landscape transformed into overflowing streams and rivers. The rain did an amazing job washing my car and removing even the bug splotches on my bumper and license plate. Within an hour, you wouldn’t have known it had rained – everything was dry again. It wasn’t until that night, when it was pitch black outside, that I realized that the rain had probably displaced many of the animals. I admit, I did not come to this conclusion alone. You see, my bathroom had a small window that looked out onto the tin roof supports. And on one of the logs was a pancake-sized tarantula.

Abandoned Ghost Towns You Must Visit In Texas

Well, the cracks and gaps in the door frame that I used to think were strange were now a source of intense fear. I jammed a bath towel into the gap under the door. My hope was that if the mammoth spider found its way to my door, it would be blocked by the siege and find another room to visit.

Of course, that didn’t stop me from dreaming of spiders dancing on my face that night. Villa de la Mina is for sale for $1.75 million. (Courtesy of The Villa de la Mina) Show more Courtesy of The Villa de la Mina
