Police said several people fell and were injured as the crowd rose as balloons filled with prizes were released during Westfield Parramatta’s “megaballoon drop” at midnight.

“They were there holding the balloons when they were released and there was obviously a small gift in the balloons,” a NSW Police spokesman said on Tuesday.

Paramedics treated 12 shoppers at the scene, and five people were taken to hospital, according to NSW Ambulance.

Investigator Phil Templeman said they were responding to reports that the balloon deflation “sent badgers looking for prizes”.
Insp Templeman said in a statement on Tuesday, “Three of the patients who were transferred had more serious problems, including traumatic brain injury, neck and back pain, nausea and dizziness.
