As our car approaches us, it feels like livers are lurching left and right. “Make up your mind, friend,” says my guide, Justin Neofitou, with a smile as he slows down his vehicle.
We drive through Garryward in the Grampians National Park, a large nature reserve three hours northwest of Melbourne. On either side are sandstone mountains – so steep and so close that I’m sure I could touch them if I rolled down my window and stretched out a little. Ahead is a narrow road that dips along the Sliab Abrupt, a high peak of 815 meters. That and the liver. With all this natural beauty around me, I didn’t know which way to go.

“It’s not unusual,” says Neophyto, co-owner of Grampians Wine Tours, gesturing towards the bird. “Driving through the Grampians is like wandering through a zoo. There’s a wild surprise at every turn. The Royal Mail Hotel is the prettiest address in the region, set against the backdrop of Mount Sturgeon in the sleepy town of Dunwoody. The main property has 40 spacious and comfortable rooms and apartments, as well as a swimming pool, a relaxed restaurant (Park Street Project) and fine dining (Wickens on the Royal Mail – see right). For the best view (and maximum indulgence), book a Deluxe Mountain View Room with private balcony and large bathroom with rain shower. Or, if you want to dial up the zen factor, stay in one of Mount Sturgeon’s eight bluestone cottages, which are part of the hotel but about three kilometers away. There is no Wi-Fi or TV in the houses – you will immediately enjoy the mountain views and tranquility.
Enjoy A Peaceful Grampians Accommodation
Koopman’s Dunkeld (95 Parker Street; 0459 250 960), a cafe in a 110-year-old garage in the town centre, has just three items on its breakfast menu. It would be hard to find a more conservative offering, but what the restaurant lacks in quality it more than makes up for – as does the excellent St Ali coffee from the state capital. “We wanted to bring Melbourne-style coffee to the country,” says owner Eve Duckmanton. Enjoy your caffeine kick with sourdough or eggs smashed avo, feta and pepitas on your way – and grab homemade scones or muffins on the way out.
When it’s time for lunch, head an hour north to Pomonale Estate in the heart of the Grampians wine region, where beer is also brewed on site. You can try a pale ale, a pilsner, or a stout, but owner Adam Atchison says, “If you’ve only had one of my beers, I’d go for the light ale. The water I use is filtered straight from Mount William [in the Grampians National Park], which makes it unique. Afterwards, claim a seat in the dining room overlooking the vineyard and tuck into lamb sausage rolls or pork and chicken dumplings.
For gourmands, dinner at Wickens on the Royal Mail in Dunkeld is a must. Many restaurants claim to have a paddock-to-plate ethos, but Wickens, one of Australia’s best-known local restaurants, lives up to the promise, with a garden that grows around 50 varieties of tomatoes and provides 80 per cent of its produce. New head chef Robin Wickens transforms seasonal ingredients from golden globe beetroot to lemon verbena into an innovative and ever-changing five-course tasting menu – one day it might include yuzu-spiked lamb or great ocean duck, another lock of sour rhubarb. Feast with matching wines in the paved back dining room with mountain views through floor-to-ceiling windows.
